President John Agyekum Kufuor was on Friday elected the new chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the 26th Heads of State summit held in Dakar, Senegal.
President Kufuor succeeds President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal.
Mr. Kwabena Agyepong, Presidential spokesman, told the GNA that President Kufuor was elected unanimously by the heads of state for a one-year term.
The ECOWAS Heads of State attended a two-day summit to discuss, among others issues, the sub-region, especially the Ivorian crisis and the situation in the Mano River Region comprising Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
They also discussed the implementation of the moratorium and the proliferation of small arms.
There was a technical meeting on the various aspects of integration as well as the creation of a monetary union by English-speaking West African countries.
The President has since returned home.

AN AMANFOO IS NOW VICE-CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIV. OF GHANA
Professor Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere on Tuesday October 1st, 2002 took the oath of office as the new Vice-Chancellor of
the University of Ghana, Legon at a colourful induction ceremony and promised to initiate pragmatic
programmes to address the challenges that confronted the University.
Born 55 years ago, Professor Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere had his Primary education at Dunkwa Catholic
Boy's School, secondary Education at Twenoboa Kodua Secondary School, Kumawu and Prempeh
College, Kumasi.
He graduated with a BSC (Hons) in Agricultural Economics at the University of Ghana, Legon in 1973.
He obtained his Masters Degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Guelph, Ontario and
a PHD in 1982 from the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA, specialising in Econometrics and
Price Analysis.
Professor Asenso-Okyere had considerable experience in research and advocacy on economic
development issues such as food and agriculture, health and nutrition and international trade policies.
He was until his appointment the Director of ISSER. Professor Asenso-Okyere has
authored/co-authored 115 publications, papers, monographs, technical and consultancy reports.

AN AMANFOO ELECTED HEAD OF THE METHODIST CHURCH, GHANA
The Very Rev. Dr. Aboagye-Mensah, has been designated the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana.
Dr. Agyei-Mensah, General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, was in August 2002 elected the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana.
His election took place at the just-ended 40th conference of the Methodist Church at the Wesley Cathedral in Kumasi.
Rev Dr Aboagye-Mensah polled 120 votes while the Right Reverend Justice Dadson, Bishop of Cape Coast Diocese got 106 votes.
The Presiding Bishop-elect will take over from the Most Reverend Dr Samuel Asante-Antwi in October next year.
Rev Dr Aboagye-Mensah thanked the church members and his colleagues for the honour bestowed on him.

SENIOR MANU SARPONG APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEE
President Kufuor has in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Mr.Yaw Manu-Sarpong, a
Banker and former Chairman of the Prempeh Golden Jubilee Program as the Chairman of the reconstituted 10-member Governing Board of Revenue Agencies in the
country.
A statement issued from the Office of the President on Thursday named other members as the
Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Commissioner of the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service
(CEPS), Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Commissioner of the Value
Added Tax (VAT).
The rest are Ms Gloria Ofori Buadu, Executive Secretary of FIDA, Mrs Victoria Dompreh an
Educationist, Mr S. K. Tsahey, a Lawyer and an Accountant, Mr Paul Osei Kwabena an Accountant
and Mr Harry Owusu, Acting Executive Secretary of the Private Enterprises Foundation (PEF).

KUFUOR HONOURED BY OXFORD'S EXETER COLLEGE

President John Agyekum Kufuor was on Wednesday honoured by the Exeter College of Oxford
University with a college crest and a flying tie on his election as the President of Ghana.
Professor Marlilyn Butler, Rector of the College presented the honour to President Kufuor, an
Alumnus of the college.
President Kufuor visited the College as part of his one-week visit to Britain.
Professor Butler said it is an honour for the College that a past graduate, should be elected to such a
high position in a country that has been a torch-bearer in Africa.
President Kufuor studied Philosophy, Political Science and Economics at the College between
1962-64.
Mr Christopher Kirwan, a former lecturer in Philosophy and President Kufuor's tutor, was
overwhelmed by his presence said "it is a great privilege to teach a head of state."
He said President Kufuor, the only Ghanaian among the 16 students at that time, was a good and
brilliant student who had great affection for mankind.
"President Kufuor had the ability to achieve great heights, a good student, an intellectual who had an
important future", he added.
President Kufuor who went into the college as a law student in the first year changed his course
because "I felt I would need everything in terms of studies to achieve my objective in life."
He said he had to change the course to understand the nature of man to enable him serve his country
better.
"The course was packaged in a manner that made the student think in a holistic way".
President Kufuor said all problems have many facets and the lecturers helped the students to have the
minds to tackle problems in a special manner.
Dr. Jonathan G.C Snicker, head of the Development Office took the President round the college.

KUFUOR HONOURED BY PREMPEH CLASS OF '75 YEAR GROUP

The Prempeh College 1975 year group on Saturday honoured President John Agyekum Kufuor, an old student, on his election
as the President of Ghana.
He was presented with a plaque and a bouquet at this year's annual fund-raising and dinner dance organised by the group at the
Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra.
President Kufuor, overwhelmed by the honour said the motto of the College, "Suban ne nimdee" (Character and Knowledge),
has made students who attended the College all-round citizens for all sectors of the economy and politics.
He commended the group for their initiative to organise the function based on year groups, adding, " I wish to encourage you
for the initiative which is exemplary.".
Two other personalities honoured were Mr. Sam Kwesi Jonah, Chief Executive of Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC) and
Mr. Frederick Osafo Ntim, Managing Director of Fon Group of Companies for their contribution to education, mining and the
paper industry in the country.
Professor A.B. Akosa, National President of the Prempeh Old Students Association who presented President Kufuor with the
plaque said all past students have a duty to President Kufuor to assist him with their brains and brawn to ensure that his
presidency achieves beyond the wildest dreams of Ghanaians.
He said the 1971 year group has decided to expand the capacity of the College's dinning hall by 200. Work would begin next
month and it is expected to be commissioned during this year's speech day.
Professor Akosa, who is also the President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), said about 700 million cedis have so far
been spent on the construction of a new dormitory for the Opoku Ware House of the College and was left with about 100
million cedis to complete the project. He called for generous contributions towards its completion.
Mr. Dominic Owusu Sekyere, President of the 1975 year group said as organisers of this year's event, they decided to make
fund-raising their main focus and was hopeful that the event was not meant for them to wine and dine but to raise funds for a
specific project that would benefit the College.
He announced that the group has decided to build a world-class Computer Data Centre, estimated at 300 million cedis for the
College.
It would consist of a powerful server, a high-speed Local Area Network, a printer and all the required peripherals and
accessories.
Mr. Owusu Sekyere said it would also be Internet-enabled to give the students the ability to send e-mails and surf the Internet
without having to go off campus.

JUMAH IS NEW KUMASI MAYOR
G'berg House, Class of '61, Maxwell "Kofi Ghana" Jumah
is now the Mayor of Kumasi.
May 8, 2001 was a momentous day in the history of Kumasi as Mr. Maxwell Kofi Jumah was sworn
into office as the first Metro Chief Executive of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) under the New
Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
A student of Town and Country Planning (TCP) at the then University of Science and Technology
(UST), Kofi Jumah, is an ardent believer in the adage "Cleanliness is next to Godliness," and has
decided to turn round the sorry state of Kumasi by working towards good sanitation practices and
improving upon the environment. He has vowed to prevent early deaths of residents out of outbreaks
of diseases for lack of simple community hygiene.
