Mr. Kofi Asante
Kofi Asante is a public servant, diplomat and a legal practitioner. He was born in
Kumasi on 17 July, 1936. He was educated at Prempeh College,University of Ghana,
Legon and the Ghana School of Law. He is married with five adult children.
Mr. Asante cut his teeth in public administration at the feet of the legendary Kobla
Kalitsi at the Volta River Authority (1962 – 1966) and at the University of Ghana
Medical School (1966 – 1970).
He joined the Ghana foreign and diplomatic service in July 1970.
As a foreign service officer, Mr. Asante held various positions as Director, Legal
and Consular Bureau and Director, Economic Relations, Trade and Investment Bureau at
headquarters.
Externally, he held such positions as Charge d’Affaires (Cote d’Ivorire), Deputy
High Commissioner (India) and as a member of the Ghana Permanent Delegation to the
United Nations, New York.
At the United Nations, he served on the Legal Committee and the Human Rights
Committee of the General Assembly and Working Groups. He participated in the
international negotiations on the law of the sea.
He was given full powers by the Government of Ghana to sign in December, 1982, the
United Nations Law of the Sea Convention at a conference of plenipotentiaries at
Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Mr. Asante is a senior partner of Ampem Chambers, a law firm.
