Mike Dee
Michael Effah Donkor was a student of Prempeh College from 1977-84, Osei Tutu House. To date, he
is well known to Amanfoo as Angola Seaman and known to the music world as Mike Dee.
Angola
Seaman was an outstanding hockey player for the school, and represented the school in so many
Inter-School hockey competitions. He is well remembered for
the role he played in
helping Prempeh College win the hockey trophy in 1980. He was also a renowned Samammo
composer, and was also the leader of the school's Samammo group. He is one of the school's cadet
officers who led the cadets to Daboya in the Northern Region of Ghana for four weeks intensive
military training.
When Atiemo (Atia) was then the headmaster in the late 70s and early 80s, Angola in 1982 teamed
up with some few devoted Amanfoo and they attempted to remove Atia from his office as the
headmaster because of malpractices and mal administration, but this attempt failed. This was not
the end, because two years later in 1984, Angola together with some dynamic students mobilised
the students to organised the most peaceful demonstration ever staged
by any secondary school in
Ghana, because not even a cup was broken, yet the students walked in the streets of Kumasi with
placards, and also ensured that the headmaster was tried in the presence of a chosen panel on
Prempeh campus, which consequently led to Atiemo being ousted from his office as the headmaster
of Prempeh College.
Michael Donkor studied Psychiatric Nursing in London, and also holds BSc Hons in Health Studies
at the University of North London. He worked his way as a Staff Nurse and went through the ranks
in Psychiatric Nursing to become a Charge Nurse in St Clements Hospital in London, and he is
presently a Community Mental Health Nurse with the East London and The City Mental Health NHS
trust. There are very few black people in the United Kingdom who hold the position
of Mental Health Act Hospital Manager, and at present Michael Donkor (Angola
Seaman/mike Dee) is a Mental Health Act Hospital Manager at South London and
Maudsley NHS Trust.
Those Amanfoo who remember Angola Seaman during his school days will find it very difficult to
believe that he is now a devoted Christian and he is also the founder and leader of his own
gospel group called the Christ Gospel Inspirational Group (CGI).
He is also a Music Writer and
Composer. Of the twelve songs featured on CGI's first album entitled "KEEP ON TRYING", Angola
wrote and composed nine of them. This album was such a great success within the Christian
circles, and saw Mike Dee/Angola Seaman on stages or in various churches in London with the
group fellowshipping with his fellow Christian believers. The success of this album led Mike
Dee/Angola Seaman to go on air for live Radio interview on Premier Radio, which is a Christian
radio station in London.
The album is also played on seven different radio stations in London.
The uniqueness of his gospel album won Angola the 1997 African Entertainment Award (AFENT)
for the Best African Gospel Writer and Composer held in London. Angola Seaman
attributes his musical career success to his
active role in Samammo during his Prempeh College days appears.
The Christian Gospel Inspirational Group is made up of an Owarean - yes, yes, yes, an Owarean (can you believe that?)
- leadsingers Fred Ofori-Mensah; Miriam Oundo, a Ugandan national; and Fiona Otchere, Angola's niece. Their music has become so popular that
a particular regular
preacher on the radio plays almost all singer Mike Dee's songs in between his sermons.
The success of their first album has made Fred an icon in his own right: His first solo debut, Asaase Nyinaa, which was recently released has made a drawing power in the gospel music
and Christian communities in England, so much so, that he visits an average of 3 churches every Sunday performing.
Fiona has an unforgettable throaty voice and a sultry beauty that belies her 19 years. She wrote, composed and co-arranged "You are Lord" and "Trust in the Lord."
The latter is so wonderfully composed and tranquilizing that some people have been using it for adverts on radio stations in London!
They use these songs in adverts without the group's permission, but it doesn't even bother Angola.
He is the President of Ideal Music Incorporated,
a recording music corporation that produces and manages various talents (music writers and singers). Angola
gives productional and promotional support to musical geniuses.
Now the album that gospel fans have been craving is
almost here: his sophomore effort is in the works and he's on a trip to Cameroon recording his second album with another gifted singer, whom
he will be signing to his Ideal Music production label.
He believes this second album is going to be even greater than the first one.
Angola has teamed
up with David Dunkley Gyimah (Journalist and President of the
ashantifilms.com) to produce a film about Prempeh College, which they have
started by going to Scotland with the TV crew to interview Reverend Pearson.
Michael Donkor is the Vice President of 'ashantifilms.com'.
Angola/Mike Dee
is also looking forward to producing many albums in the years to come.
In addition to the making of the Prempeh College documentary, the making of his second album,
and the management of various artists on his Ideal Music initiative,
the ambidexterous Angola Seaman is also working on The Amanfoo Samamo
Songs CD, Vol I., which is currently being recorded by Seniors Angola Seaman, and Chief Atta
Siaw and some St. Monicas ladies. It should be ready in a few months.
It is indeed very clear that this is an adaptable man who had a hidden talent beneath his rampageous and ruffianly boarding school
effigy. Who could've imagined that the unruly "all-Headmasters' nightmare" from Osei Tutu House
had such a hidden talent?
