OKYENHENE ELECTED PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL HOUSE OF CHIEFS

Kumasi, Ghana, Nov. 24, - Osagyefo Kuntunkununku the Second, paramount
chief of Akyem Abuakwa, was Tuesday elected president of the National
House of Chiefs (NHC) for a three-year term.
He polled 25 out of the 48 votes cast to beat Odeefuo Boa Amponsem the
Third, Denkyirahene, who had 23 votes in a keenly but peacefully contested
election supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC).
Two other paramount chiefs who withdrew their candidature at the
eleventh hour were Nana Kwame Nkyi the Twelfth, Omanhene of Assin Apemanim
Traditional Area, and Agyewodin Adu Gyamfi Ampem the Second, Acherensuahene.
Naa Puoure Puobe Chiir the Seventh, Nandom Naa, retained his position
as vice-president when he polled 34 out of the 48 votes cast as against 14
votes managed by his opponent, Naa Kuoro Kyigye Mumuni Dimbie the Second,
Wellembele Kuoro.
Miss Justice Rose Owusu, Supervising High Court Judge for Ashanti who
administered the oath of office and judicial oath to the elected
officers and the entire membership of the house, asked them to uphold the honour and
dignity of the chieftaincy institution as enshrined in the constitution.
She advised them to be conversant with the Chieftaincy Act and coperate
within its confines for smooth administration in their areas.
