    CLASH OF THE TITANS

    February 4, 2004

After OWASS lost to KASS in the semi-final duel between the two just about an hour ago, Prempeh loses the opportunity of venting and spewing their wrath on them KASS beat OWASS later this evening to meet Prempeh College in the final.

PREMPEH QUALIFIES FOR THE GRAND FINALE

    February 4, 2004

Following the defeat suffered by OKESS at the hands of Prempeh College, Prempeh entered into the semi-final to face stiffer oppsition as they had to battle with Obuasi Sec. Tech, one of the "gurus" in secondary school soccer.

Today, the fear and cry of all Prempeh students and Amanfoo came to a complete halt as they beat Obuasi Sec Tech by a lone goal in the ongoing Milo Soccer Competition. This year is really the year of the Amanfoo. What all the students are saying is that, "if we don't grab the trophy this year, then eternity," meaning this year will really see the Milo trophy back at Sofoline.

Prempeh now wait for the winner of tomorrow's match. Is it going to be the Akatakyie or the Abrempong? (OWASS vs KASS). The team of magnificent and skilful players have sworn that, "this year wouldn't see OWASS winning any competition which Prempeh PARTICIPATES."

    PREMPEH WINS TOUGH MATCH 3:0

    February 2, 2004

In a match that ended just a few minutes ago, Prempeh shocked the world by beating OKESS, the defending champions, 3 nil in the quarter final of the Inter-schools Milo Soccer tournament. This is a very impressive accomplishment given the strength of the Champs, who won their previous match by a score of 12:1. We next take on Obuasi Sec Tech in the semi-final.

HEADMASTER CLARIFIES DISCREPANCY IN HIS SPEECH DAY ADDRESS

    January 30, 2004

Headmaster Owusu-Achiaw Headmaster: "The 99.9% pass as said in my speech day address is the school's own way of measuring those who qualify to enter the university and tertiary institutions so I didn't lie when I said it in my report." "2nd to Presec was the UST admissions and not SSSCE as people thought. I meant we were second to PRESEC in students gaining admissions to UST." Headmaster Owusu-Achiaw made these clarifications when the Senior Prefect called upon him to explain the discrepancy today.

After the Prefects meeting with the Headmaster this afternoon, the Prefects issued a statement to this website that they as well as the attendants of the speech day "didn't get the Headmaster RIGHT so the information was taken differently." It may be recalled that the Ghanaian press published a press report of Prempeh's Speech Day and Graduation Ceremony of December 6, 2003, in which our Headmaster had stated in his address that Prempeh was second nationally behind PRESEC in SSCE. Several days later, however, the Daily Graphic published the national results of the SSSCE in which Prempeh was actually 15th, and PRESEC 17. Amanfoo were outraged when it seemed at that time that the Headmaster had in his speech distorted figures to deceive the audience.

Luckily for the Headmaster, the more articulate and visionary Senior Prefect gave an interview with this website on December 6 in which he clearly stated that "Prempeh was second to PRESEC in University admissions to KNUST," which should be comforting to the Headmaster. This, however, doesn't save him from his myriad of problems, including his laxity with Prempeh admissions, which has caused a population explosion in the school. That and his uneccesary charging of extra-fees - a corruption that reached the Education Minister's desk - is what rankles the PTA. He is under even greater pressure this week because of the political controversy his letter and signature has generated nationally.

    PREMPEH KNOCKS OUT LIGHTWEIGHT OWASS

    Friday, January 30, 2004

Our former Asst. Headmaster, who now heads OWASS, earned a first defeat at the hands of Mighty Prempeh when his Santasi boys were schooled by the highly articulate Prempeh students in the National Inter-Schools Debate Contest, which took off on Thursday, January 29.

This year's Inter schools Debate started with the various schools and defending champions "shooting" and "tooting" their horns. With OWASS winning last year's event as well as becoming second in the SSCE, they thought Prempeh was in their claws.

The motion for this year's debate was"the increasing social vices which breed disciplinary problems in our schools are the result of communication gap btn students and school authorities." On Thurday, 29th January, the debate took off with Prempeh contesting against their sister girls school, YAGSS. Prempeh beat them to it as they were no match for us. Prempeh thus qualified for the quarter final and then beat Kumasi Sec. Tech. School who were their opponents. The brilliant squad of Prempeh College was made up of:

    • Kharliq Abdul (Ramseyer)
    • Papa Yaw Ohene Konadu (OW)
    • Gyeabour Kwasi Owusu (OT)
    • William Demitiah (Ramseyer) who is a form one student.

Today, Prempeh College met OWASS in the semi final and beat them 1-2 at Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI), the venue for the debate. The Santasi boys cried their eyes out as they were so perturbed by the turn of events. Prempeh then went to the final with Kumasi Academy and beat them as well. This makes Prempeh the current champions in the region. They thus go for the nationals with schools like Mfantsipim, Wey Gey Hey, Ghana National and will represent the Northern sector.

PREMPEH OPENS SOCCER SEASON WITH A 9:1 THRASHING

    Friday, January 30, 2004

This year's Inter Schools Milo Soccer competition took off yesterday, 29th January. Prempeh College's first match was against Amaniampong Sec.Sch. They couldn't stand the might and skill of Prempeh as they were thrashed 9:1. Prempeh then goes into the competition with stiffer opposition as they face the might of the defending champions, Osei Kyeretwie Sec School (OKESS) who thrashed their opponents by 12 goals to 1. Unfortunately, our students were not allowed to go and view the match at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.

PREMPEH HEADMASTER'S LETTER RAISES CONTROVERSY NATIONALLY

    Wednesday, 28 January 2004
    Culled from The Chronicle

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the honorable Minister of Information, Nana Akomea, and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of deceiving Ghanaians, when they made a promise last year to absorb increases in school fees for students in the Senior Secondary Schools in the 2003 and 2004 academic year.

Speaking to The Chronicle here yesterday, Alhaji Collins Dauda, the NDC regional chairman, said almost two months after the pledge was made, some secondary schools in the country are chasing parents and guardians to pay the arrears of their wards’school fees, following a directive issued by the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, announcing an increase in the fees in the second cycle institutions.

He said the announcement by the information minister could never hold and therefore urged the people of this country not to believe what Nana Akomea had said.

According to Alhaji Dauda, a front page story in the Graphic of October, 15 last year, with the headline “Min to Absorb Fee Increase for Secondary Schools” quoted the minister as saying “parents, according to the release, would, therefore, pay last year’s rate of ¢1,279,000 as the government’s subsidy rises from ¢310,000 per student per year to ¢394,000 per student per year.”

The publication, the NDC guru added, stated that the Cabinet had directed that the increases in fees for senior secondary schools should be absorbed by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.

He said Nana Akomea, as quoted in the said story, explained that the decision of the government followed a request by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for upward adjustments in the payment of school fees.

The NDC regional chairman said however a circular letter, signed by the Director General of GES, Rev. Ama Afo Blay, and dated December 2, 2003, titled ‘Approved fees for 2nd cycle institutions for 2003/2004’ sent to all second cycle institutions in the country, informed all heads of schools about the government’s approval of new bills.

He contended that the said circular with reference No GES/DG.105/II/66, stated that the government would continue to pay the absorbed fees.

Alhaji Dauda said he was surprised when he learnt that the government had rather directed all parents to pay the approved fees of ¢513,333 per term and a further amount of ¢121,333.00, being arrears of the previous term.

Displaying a letter, signed by the headmaster of Prempeh College, Mr. Owusu-Achiaw, dated 23rd December, 2003, the NDC regional chairman said parents were urged to pay all the fees with a bank draft before their wards reported back to school on the January 19, this year.

Alhaji Dauda, a former MP for Asutifi North, also showed this reporter a receipt from a student of the Sunyani Secondary School, indicating that the affected student had fully paid his fees without any subsidy from the government as pledged by Akomea.

He challenged the government and Hon. Akomea to make their position clear, once and for all.
