THE WORRISOME DEPARTURE OF AN INSIDER

    Mr. Stephen Anokye
    Mr. Stephen Anokye -
    he is taking our secrets
    to OWASS

    December 28, 2003

Interco 2004 (Athletics) is scheduled for February, during which we hope to re-claim the trophy we won in 2002 and narrowly lost it (by 1.5 pts) in 2003. This website will be covering it right from the Kumasi Sports Stadium, and all the alumni of the other schools will be tuned in here for coverage.

With our former Asst. Headmaster having vowed to make his alma mater OWASS better than Prempeh [see his interview], this is going to be the most exciting year in Kumasi. And with the Science & Maths Quiz going on at the same time, our former Headmaster, who was in charge of Prempeh's Math/Science Quiz program says he'll successfully lead the Owareans against us. Prempeh will match him and his boys boot for boot in the quiz, athletics and hockey.

Given the Akatakyies firm opposition to his appointment he's increasingly eager to disprove his critics at our expense. So visit us next term for this emerging challenge.

We will start with a profile of our athletics team and our arriving sports master when school reopens in January. The current sports master (Mr. Lartey) has just retired.

    V.I.P ROCKS ENTERTAINMENT

    December 19, 2003

As usual, the VARIETY SHOW had to take place before vacation and this time round, VISION IN PROGRESS (V.I.P), the reigning champions of the Ghana TOP 10 chart for almost 10 weeks now (a record though) were there to add more "scent" to the event. The group made up of PROMZY, LAZZY and PRODIGAL were in their usual style of thrilling everyone with their unique dance.

The atmosphere was so charged that people from the environs of Sofoline thought the school was on fire. They sang the xmas song in Ghana, "Ahomka wo mu", "Sisi na die wo mu" which sent everybody dancing. This has broken the record SET BY Lord Kenya when he came to the school two years ago.

WE HAVE DEMOTED OUR ASST. D-HALL PREFECT!

    December 19, 2003

Even as the Vice President, whose youngest son is an Amanfoo is waging a battle against indiscipline, it occurs some people haven't heard of it. Festus Owusu aka FELLA, the 1st Assistant DHP has been demoted. The prefect was demoted based on four charges of:

    • insulting the senior prefect during a Prefects Council meeting when he came in late and was shabbily dressed.
    • threatening to beat up the 1st Assistant SP when he questioned his conduct on campus.
    • preventing the senior prefect from entering the Dining Hall because he claims that is his "office".
    • having an affair with one of the matrons at the pantry.

This demotion of the DHP has become like smoke among all the schools in Kumasi and this according to the headmaster was to "deter any other prefect from misbehaving."

BEREKUM PREFECTS COUNCIL VISITS THE KINGS COLLEGE

    December, 2003

The prefectorial body of twenty students of Berekum Secondary School (BESS) in the Brong Ahafo Region visited the College on 16th to 23rd November this year. The prefects were in the schoool with their school bus and in their usual "light blue" school uniform being headed by their Senior Prefect. They were there to explore so much about the success story of Prempeh College:

    • how the students behave (at prep, D-hall etc)
    • how the lectures are like
    • how the tutors teach
    • how the school looks
    • the behaviour of the Prefects, and above all
    • how the Prefects go about their duties.

The Berekum Prefects stayed in the school for one week using all the facilities in the school and socializing with the young Amanfoo.

On the day of their departure, their School Prefect had this to say:

"Prempeh is really a great school but I have realized that, they don't like speaking English".

Upon saying this, the whole place became quiet. This is something of great concern to us.

    G.E.S. WARNS PREMPEH HEADMASTER

    December, 2003

The headmaster recently at the 54th speech-day said "only the best is good for Prempeh." Some days before the speech-day, however, the headmaster was cautioned by the Ghana Educ. Service when he asked
    Education Minister Hon. Baah-Wiredu
    Education Minister Hon. Baah
    Wiredu, Class of '74

students to pay hundred thousand cedis for an academic gown. According to the students, they didn't understand this since their predecessors paid twenty thousand cedis for it and not 100,000 cedis. A parent therefore reported this to the G.E.S and it took the intervention of the Amanfoo in Kumasi to remedy the situation. Students were also billed 60,000 cedis for a Methodist Hymn Book that costs 30,000 cedis in town. When the headmaster was questioned, he said, "the school needed some money for developmental projects." Why then do the students pay developmental levy?

School fees has also increased tremendously this term and the Minister of Education, Mr. K. Baah-Wiredu, himself a product of the Prempeh Class of '74, angrily chastized our Headmaster in his statement to the Press last week, asking him to "refund all fees". The question that one asks is, "Is it the Headmaster O.D.P.'s corruption factor?"

EDUCATION MINISTER CALLS FOR REFUND OF EXCESSIVE PREMPEH TUITION

    2 December, 2003

The Minster for Education, Youth and Sports, Mr. Kwadwo Baah Wiredu has said that, the outcry about the level of school fees this year is rather unfortunate, because when the Cabinet approved of the new fees, it directed that the increase be absorbed in total by the Ministry of Finance.

The Minister made this disclosure today in Accra in reaction to this academic year’s school fees and other levies during the “Press Briefing” at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Information. He said, the investigations conducted into the matter revealed among others that; fees charged have usually been swollen mainly by the PTA dues, Board of Governors levies, and other charges imposed by Heads of Schools.

Mr Baah Wiredu said that most of these extra fees and levies that are almost equal to the approved fees have not been cleared by the Director General of Ghana Education Service by earlier directive and described the practice as disturbing.

The Minister stated that, all heads of schools and colleges are aware that the regulation regarding PTA levies should not be more than ˘ 80,000.He, therefore, questioned those schools such as Adonteng Secondary school, Asamankese Secondary school Prempeh College that charged arbitrary fees of ˘ 350,000, ˘ 320,000, ˘ 330,000 respectively far above the regulated PTA fee.

The Sector Minister said, it was regrettable that, the impression is being created that, government is insensitive to the plight of parents because since 2001/2002 academic year, the Government had not increased fees payable by parents. The Government, Mr Baah Wiredu said, to redress the situation had directed that all PTA and other levies above the regulated ˘ 80,000 paid by parents should be refunded to them. The Government had therefore directed all affected schools to complete the refunds to parents by the close of this term.

The Minister said to forestall future occurrence of these high levels of unapproved levies and charges, government had further directed that, henceforth; parents should have the option of purchasing their own school materials like books and uniforms from either the school or the open market. Under no circumstance should PTA issue separate bills to parents, the Minister cautioned. All bills of Second cycle institutions shall be vetted by the District Directors of Education before being sent to parents and each term’s bill displayed openly on the notice boards of Schools and Colleges, he directed.

The Government would do all it can to ensure that, parents are not unduly exploited so as to give meaning to the attempt at allowing more people have access to Secondary education., the Minister concluded.

OWAREANS OBJECT TO APOINTMENT OF PREMPEH ASST. HEAD AS THEIR HEADMASTER

Kumasi, Oct 13, GNA - The Opoku Ware Secondary School (OWASS) Old Boys Association has strongly objected to the appointment of Mr Stephen Anokye, an Assistant Headmaster (Domestic) of Prempeh College by the Ghana Education Service (GES) as the new Headmaster of OWASS. The Old Boys said their objection to the appointment stems from the fact that as an assistant headmaster, Mr Anokye lacked the requisite experience and capability to effectively "head a first class and renowned school like Opoku Ware Secondary School."

The association's objection and stance was contained in a press statement signed by the association's National President, Nana Opoku Mensah and issued in Kumasi on Sunday.

    Mr. Stephen Anokye
    Mr. Stephen Anokye -
    Owareans oppose his
    appointment
The decision to appoint Mr Anokye as new headmaster of OWASS was taken in September following an interview conducted by the GES for the position.

Mr Anokye, who is also an old student of OWASS, is to replace Mr James Berko who had been headmaster of the school from 1987-2003 and now proceeding on retirement.

The release stressed, "The decision to appoint an assistant headmaster (Domestic) of another school to head an institution as great as OWASS without any proven experience does not augur well and portrays OWASS as though it was a training ground for headmasters."

The Old Boys cautioned that if the GES did not take a second look at the appointment of Mr Anokye, they would withdraw all financial and material support that they offer the school.

"The association will cut all links with the school should the GES go ahead to make Mr Anokye, headmaster of OWASS", the release stated. The Old Boys also said notwithstanding his inexperience, Mr Anokye has always been adamant to virtually all programmes designed by the old boys association to enhance progress of OWASS even though he is himself an old student, and for that matter does not deserve to occupy the position.
