GWCL loses revenue through illegal connections
Culled from GNA
September 21, 199
Kumasi, Sept. 21, GNA - The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) loses 35 per cent of its revenue from treated water
through illegal connections. Mrs Sophia Morney, Deputy Administrative Director of the GWCL in Ashanti, said pipes
connected by the Company are buried in the ground while illegal connections are exposed.
Mrs Morney was speaking at the inauguration of the Kumasi Academy branch of the Water, Energy and Resources
Conservation Club (WERCCO), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) for Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) in the
Ashanti Region.
Mrs Morney, also the National President of WERCCO, appealed to the public to report all such illegal connections to the
Company since production of treated water "is costly and the Company cannot continue to lose revenue through such illegal
acts".
She appealed to Chiefs to refrain from selling lands within GWCL catchment areas for development, citing Bekwai and
Konongo where "lands around catchment areas have been encroached upon, thereby making it difficult to provide regular
potable water to the inhabitants."
Mrs Morney called on members of the Club to intensify their education campaign on water conservation. This is "because
although the earth surface is covered by about 75 per cent water, 97 per cent of it, is salty, two per cent is frozen and only
about one per cent is fresh water which is suitable for drinking".
Mr Dennis Addo, the Secretary, said WERCCO was established in 1996 to sensitise students and the public on the need to
conserve water and preserve other natural resources in view of the high rate of Ghana's population growth.
The Club has branches in Opoku Ware School, Prempeh College, Kumasi High School, Yaa Asantewaa Secondary School,
Saint Louis Secondary School and Saint Hubert's Seminary.

Asantehene disburses ˘100m to students
Culled from The Graphic
06 September 1999
George Ernest Asare in Kumasi
THE Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has disbursed ˘100 million to some selected secondary schools in Ashanti to provide
scholarship to brilliant but needy students from those schools this academic year.
Among the schools which have benefited from the scheme are Prempeh College, Opoku Ware, Osei Tutu, Asanteman, Osei
Kyeretwie and Yaa Asantewaah Secondary Schools. He said 150 students from various junior secondary schools in Ashanti
would also be offered Opoku Ware Endowment Fund this academic year. The Opoku Ware Endowment Fund was instituted
by the late Asantehene.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu announced this when executive members of Nestle Ghana Limited paid a courtesy call on him at the
Manhyia Palace.
The Asantehene noted that a computer clinic would be opened in Kumasi soon to train students from the JSS.
He explained that a time table would be drawn up to enable all J.S.S. students benefit from the computer clinic when it
becomes operational.
On the funding of tertiary institutions, the Asantehene noted that a scheme would be drawn up from the Osei Tutu Endowment
Fund to assist those in the tertiary institutions. He said the Asanteman Council is also considering a scheme of establishing a best
teacher award for teachers in Ashanti to motivate teachers to offer their best as a way of raising the falling standards of
education in the region.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu also noted that the council has drawn up a programme to earmark certain amount from his endowment fund
to re-roof and paint schools in the Kumasi Metropolis.
He noted that the Asanteman Council has taken all these measures with the sole objective that the falling educational standard
which has become the concern of all stakeholders will rise again.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu made it clear that it is time industries join the crusade to fund education in the country because the
government, with numerous responsibilities cannot do it alone.
Besides, he said, the various industries benefit directly from education because the best intellectuals are employed by the
industries as engineers, accountants, consultants and administrators, among others.
The Managing Director of Nestle Ghana Ltd, Mr. Andrew Porchet, who led the team pledged to contribute to the funding of
education in the country. Toward this end, he presented ˘5 million cheque on behalf of Nestle towards the Osei Tutu
Endowment Fund.He also presented some of the company’s products and drinks to the Asantehene.
