Another catastrophe on the way

First OWASS crushed us in the Sciences in the national exams this year. Then Prempeh placed 5th in Superzonals. But that is not all. The worst is yet to come in academics, as teachers don't teach and the school now plans forfeiture of Science Quiz competitions.

Prempeh boys celebrate on the campus of Legon on Saturday, July 7, after defeating St. Peter's 84-79 in the quarterfinal of the 2007 National Science & Maths Quiz competition.

The video you just saw illustrates the euphoria that grips Amanfoo when our alma mater shows its power in academic events. Prempeh old boys went crazy in Legon campus last year when we came from behind to defeat St. Peter's School.

But that video scene appears to be the last Bacchanalia Prempeh will ever stage anywhere if the current situation at Sofoline is not arrested immediately!

As has been the tradition, the National Science and Maths Quiz is seen as the competition that portrays the true colours of the various schools in Ghana. The "colours'here imply that, the quiz shows Ghanaians the "best" among equals of the schools in Ghana. The Grade A schools have shown their mettle in this competition over the years.

Though Prempeh College has won twice, Presec has won it three times. Just like the Ghana Black Stars who have won the African Cup of Nations four times and have now being shrouded in obscurity by Egypt and Cameroon, the college has allowed schools like Presec and Peters to match their status in this contest.

Dompreh, Jeffrey and Mawuena did their best last year placing 4th for the college. What every Amanfoo wants to see is Prempeh lifting the trophy for the 3rd time. That is not to be as the current squad has been neglected for some time now with only Mr. Kupo doing all he can for the boys.

Mr. Kupo is a Physics teacher and therefore can teach Physics and a little Mathematics. The other tutors who lecture Biology and Chemistry are nowhere to be found placing the arduous task on only one poor man who also has a lot of stuffs to do.

With the Regional Science and Maths Quiz around the corner, the contestants have decided not to go in for the quiz as they may disgrace themselves and the college. Last year, our contestants beat all the schools in Ashanti Region and won the competition. This year, the defending champions are planning on boycotting the competition as a result of ill-preparation.

The question is, if the contestants are avoiding the Regionals because of lack of preparation, will there be enough preparation for them to compete in the Nationals where the competition will be so keener. Are the masters telling us to forget about the quiz? Who will save Mother Prempeh? Does the headmaster care? What are the Senior Amanfoo doing?

At Prempeh today, teachers no longer teach, roll call is optional, sports men feign injuries and refuse to compete and parents refuse to attend PTA meetings all because of a rogue headmaster who refuses to partake in any endeavour that does not fill his private pockets with money.
