Another crisis looms: Prempeh Prefects launch strike action

Monday, January 14, 2008

School reopened last week Thursday and Reopening ceremony was supposed to have been held the very next morning. But the ceremony has been postponed indefinitely because the Senior Prefect planned with his deputies during the vacation to stage a walk-out and turn over their badges during the Opening Ceremony.

Senior Prefect David Nimoh
Senior Prefect David Nimoh: he wants Owusu-Achiaw to return stolen funds before his cabinet resume work in the new year.
The prefects are refusing to work until the Headmaster hands over the money he has stolen from the school, especially the Asthma Foundation funds that Mr. Owusu-Achiaw embezzled.

When the Senior Prefects discussed their plans with the entire Prefects Council and they all agreed to join, one treacherous prefect revealed the planned strike action to the disgraced headmaster, who has so far refused to hold the opening ceremony. The college (as of today) was still at a stand-still.

The headmaster refuses to hold the Opening Assembly because the spectacle of his prefects walking out on him in the full glare of the college community will be too humiliating for Achiaw.

The Headmaster has called for an emergency meeting with the Prefects late tonight (meeting still in progress; we will bring you more later) in an attempt to get them to change their minds.

The Senior Prefects say they are exhausted from serving as "Acting Headmaster" since the headmaster is never at the school. They say they refuse to work as "headmasters" because they are mere students; they are not supposed to handle difficult campus situations by themselves. The Prefects were able to find the Headmaster on campus only on two or three ocassions last term. It may be recalled that the PTA Chairman has already testified that he had not seen the headmaster on the campus in about 3 months.

Though Achiaw remains very unpopular on campus and 99.9% of the students want him out, there are a few boys who are loyal to him because they are believed to have gained admission to the school through bribery. Those who bribed Achiaw to get accepted to Prempeh are still beholden to him despite his ignominy. One such student revealed the plan of the Senior Prefect to Achiaw.

The Senior Prefect has been pestering Achiaw for the unconditional return of the Asthma Foundation funds. Anytime he asks Achiaw to return the money that is intended to buy medicine for sick children, Achiaw responds, "I have no comment." Senior David Nimo now wants the headmaster to handover the stolen money before his cabinet begins their work in the new year.
