RE: Gberg boys don't pursue University Education

Thursday, May 3, 2007

The following is a rejoinder to the article that appeared on this website on March 25, 2007, entitled, "G'berg Products are the least likely to Pursue Higher Education."

Its quite unfortunate that the President of Amanadehyee , KNUST, Snr. Tonto made a sad remark about Guggisberg guys at this year’s Amanadehyee Congress held at the University of Ghana, Legon. He is reported to have said that most G’berg guys are unable to make it to the University. I would like to emphatically state that this is untrue. His observation is very biased. I would not want to believe that Snr. Tonto (who is from OT House) intentionally made this remark to spite G’berg boys due to the ‘rivalry’ between us.

It is a known fact that there are many G’berg guys in the various universities both in Ghana and abroad. The list is endless; Seniors Kwabena Ankoma Nyarko, Kofi Kofo Boakye, Frikazoy, Jeffrey Nsafoah, Ala Ala (CO), Adolf Nii Quartey, Jah Boo, Red Boo, Aboagye Menyeh, Elorm Tuani, Dominicus, Kyei Mensah Amoako, Toroo, Armstrong Ababio, Francis, Chikale, Stalon ‘T’, Amito (Sports P), Yaw ‘B’ (Prep P), Gideon Amfo (Library P), Charles Akoto, Kingsley Ahey, Kwabena Sarfo, Richard Baafi, …. These are all from the Class of 2003 only (which I can remember) and with the other year groups, you can name Snrs. Louis Oteng Gyimah, Ivan Nyarko Dankwah, Godson, Moschino, Edwin, Samuel Yaw Frimpong, Kwame Agyemang Duah, Kwabena Adiyiah Agyin (aka Sperm Gangsta), Hamidu Tofiq, Jeffrey Agyemang, Patrick Mensah Bonsu (aka Don Sevenz), Luther Agyei Kwabi, the list goes on and on.

There are a number of reasons why most Amanfoo were unable to join the congress. The time for the congress was initially scheduled for a time that students of KNUST would be writing the mid-semester exams which form 30% of their total scores for each course. It was rescheduled only after some members had drawn the attention of Snr. Tonto to this. Some had by then made other plans which they could not cancel already. Another headache was getting money for transport and spending within barely one week. So it is clear that not everyone could be at the Congress and hence if it had happened that there were a few ‘G’bergans’ there, it is no excuse for our president to pass such a comment.

If Snr. Tonto has very little to do, I would like to advise him to concentrate his efforts on how to effectively organize Amanadehyee KNUST so that most of the Amanfoo and Adehyee on KNUST campus will be enticed to attend meetings and participate in all activities. There is a lukewarm attitude when it comes to attendance of Amanadehyee meetings here.

I would however like to commend him for the introduction of ID Cards for members though the way it was implemented left much to be desired. I am also surprised that after return from the congress, not even a single meeting has been called. This was a general suspicion that the there was going to be a neglect of the Association after congress. It seems that the Association becomes vibrant when there is going to be an occasion of ‘chilling’. Some think that the Association is there for ‘chilling’ only and I think that this needs to be corrected.

I would reserve the rest of my comments now for the sake of the neutrality that I have to maintain as a member of the prempeh.org website team. I mean not to offend anyone.

- Robert Baffour-Awuah (G’berg 2003)
