School reopens; new policy enforced

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

When the Headmaster decided to set up a "50% rule" at Sofoline, the boys thought it was comedy.

Several days before he made his announcement last May, we broke the story here. Some of the boys, finding the 50% pass mark funny printed it and laughed at it for its harshness.

Days later when Mr. owusu-Achiaw finally stepped in the Assembly Hall to tell the school that only those who obtain a mark of 50% or higher will remain at the College, they mocked him with, "Oh we know already, we know already."

Little did they know then that the man meant his words. 29 students have now been kicked out of the school and have been informed by mail that they are not to return. The headmaster sent letters to their parents that the boys are not to come to school, as their names are no longer on the school register. Of the students affected, 15 fell below 50% and 14 did not sit for their exams at all. It is somehow believed that at least one has traveled outside the country.

The following is a breakdown of the number of affected students in each class:

Class No. of Dismissed Students
1A2 5
2A1 4
2S1 4
1B3 2
2A2 2
2S5 2
2V 2
1S1 1
1S2 1
1V 1
1A3 1
2A3 1
2B1 1
2S2 1
2S4 1
