A Case of Treachery Uncovered at Sofoline

Friday, March 17, 2006

By Harold Ofori

Prempeh's Assistant Headmaster in charge of Academics, who is brilliant in the management of academic affairs, has been caught in a treasonous act.

Just before the Superzonal Athletics, Mr. Koduah, the Assistant Headmaster in charge of Academics, whose opposition to all forms of sports is legendary, secretly discouraged a star athlete from competing for the school.

Mr. Koduah, who is a Prempeh old boy, went on to call high-jumper Livington's father and convinced him that the son is acting like a fool by wasting his time in competing in Prempeh's green and gold colours. Mr. Koduah brainwashed the father so much that the parent banned his son from ever partaking in any athletic activities.

Realizing that his deputy had betrayed him, Headmaster Owusu-Achiaw entered morning assembly one day and asked the athlete, in the full glare of the entire student body, to give him his father's telephone number.

Fearing that the boy was going to be kicked out of the school for something he might have done, the whole school went aghast. But to everyone's surprise, the headmaster brilliantly took the phone number, called Livington's dad on his mobile phone immediately, and had the father agree to let his son compete for Prempeh College, while the disgraced Prempeh Old boy, Mr. Koduah watched from a distance.

The boy then went on to the Super-Zonals and contributed immensely to Prempeh's victory.

Mr. Koduah's sufferings, however, were not incapacitating. He developed another strategy to ensure that Prempeh never succeeds in sports again. He has been antagonizing the Headmaster's sports agenda behind the scenes, invoking the proverbial "mebaa ha gyaa wo (I started working here before you)" , manyini kyen wo (I'm older than you), and other backward attitudes to distract the headmaster.

When the Headmaster, who is Vice-Chairman of Inter-Schools Sports, decided to meet the boys and present them with special motivational incentives, such as a party and other awards, Mr. Koduah threatened and discouraged him. Allegedly, when Yaa Asantewaa headmistress stepped in and offered to organize a party for our boys, Mr. Koduah and some of Prempeh masters secretly went to confront the woman and urged her not to give any honours to Prempeh athletes because they do not deserve any thanks.

Headmaster Owusu-Achiaw, whose heart is in the right place, has developed some visionary sports ideas, vital among which is a plan to offer scholarship or tuition reimbursements for sportsmen , an initiative which will be unprecedented in the country. In fact, we will all aspire to contribute to such a fund by the headmaster. But Koduah attacks him in private and discourages him. The gall of an ingrate who has been given several second chances by Prempeh!

In fact, it is fair to say that if Mr. Koduah had his way, the money our headmaster gave for Sabath Adusei's hospital expenses when the boy had to be rushed from the field to the emergency room for stitches, would not have been given. Because of his penchant for treachery and his well-documented opposition to sports, which he is never reluctant to deny, it is even fair to say that my fellow Pearsonian Mr. Koduah is a man who would love to gleefully watch a Prempeh athlete die in pain on the streets of Kumasi.

The Prempeh-Adisadel hybrid who betrayed the school in his final year as a student, and had to continue his last year at Adisadel, is blemishing once again the second chance he has been given to redeem himself.

The indiscretions that formed the basis for his expulsion from Prempeh in his student days could be dismissed as part of the learning curve ONLY IF he changes his retrograde and anachronistic attitude by supporting Prempeh' causes.

Koduah and his equally myopic abettors on the Prempeh teaching staff are the reasons why a majority of the football team have refused to train for the impending national football championship (which kicks off next month) -- a situation that could erupt into another serious crisis at the school.

It is one thing to disagree with your boss about compensation for boys who sacrifice their time, health and energy to bring pride to the school. But to cause the school to fail in an endeavour by secret machinations is ultimate treason!
