    A VASTLY IMPROVED PREMPEH

    Monday, January 30, 2006

Because of our series of reports here, Prempeh College has improved tremendously in terms of attitudinal adjustment by administrators and staff.

Not only has a new matron been sent in by the Ghana Educational Service, the masters who showed a lackadaisical attitude towards work simply because they are not products of the school have suddenly changed. They have realised that, even if they are not graduates of Prempeh, a good work they do at Sofoline will go a long way in shaping their future.

The stage of the Osae Assembly Hall, freshly renovated by Nana Akyempemhene. Prempeh.org initiatives brought the degradation there to light.

Furthermore, the Prefects are highly respected by the staff and the students. Some of the students we have spoken to since school reopened, have stated that "the Prefects are heroes."

The Headmaster is also now acting like a headmaster, pushing in staff in the right direction at all times. The website has put him on his toes. All the teachers are very active now and the work that a single man would have done alone is now done by so many masters. An example is the Dining Hall monitoring. No longer is it the domain of the master-on-duty to oversee dining hall activities, but rather several masters -- sometimes over 20 of them -- show up at the facility.

The campus looks "brand new" right now. Following our report of the C100 million scandal -- C50,000 per student collection undertaken by the Headmaster -- the money was diverted towards refurbishing purposes. The GES auditors, who have already learned about the controversy at this website, will find later this term that each cedi has been completely accounted for.

Another example is the supervision of prep in the evenings. No longer is it conducted solely by the members of the prep committee; all the masters participate!

An even better example is the preparation towards the national science and maths quiz. So many masters both old and new are helping and the boys are really serious. When we visited the quiz contestants one afternoon in early January before school reopened, the masters we met at the administration block -- some of whom were non-science teachers -- gave us an intimate portrait of the boys and a detailed account of their progress. The boys were enjoying siesta then and the masters were all familiar with when they were to wake up and what was next on their agenda.

When prempeh.org sent in money for the quiz contestants in January, about 7 non-Science teachers called to thank us -- including some from the English department. This shows that the staff are now united with a single goal in mind: to advance Prempeh's causes.

The job that our quiz coordinators would have done alone are now being performed by several masters.
