    NEW DEVELOPMENTS AT PREMPEH.ORG

    Monday, May 30, 2005

We have now introduced several subdomains at prempeh.org, such as freeman.prempeh.org, ramseyer.prempeh.org, administration.prempeh.org, serwah.prempeh.org.

This means that each of the 9 houses will have its own subdomain, with a specific password to that subsection of the website, to be updated rapidly from their own environs. For example, Serwah's webmaster or representative will be responsible for rapidly updating news breaking out in Serwah house and for reporting in-house activities (e.g., house meetings, roll-calls, etc). The Headmaster's office and the Administration will also handle administration.prempeh.org and post there the relevant College material, such as those relating to admissions, school closings and reopenings and administrative matters in general.

The Chaplaincy will handle chaplaincy.prempeh.org, where the Chaplain and his Chapel Prefects will post material related to church services directly.

The website will be the same for all the pages: same colours, layout, design and style everywhere, but each of these sections will be handled by a person from that house or department who has first-hand knowledge of the information and the desire to present it to the world with rapidity. In fact, one may not notice the difference when the subdomains take effect. There will be no new domain addresses to memorize -- just the same old prempeh.org. Universities around the globe use a similar system to display their websites.

All the web representatives from the various houses and departments will work in concert with prempeh.org webmasters who are recent Sofoline graduates at Legon and KNUST, since these young Amanfoo in the universities are more adept at balancing this work with their studies. This will ensure that current students contribute effectively to the mainatenance of the website without consuming too much of their study time. All these persons will be supervised by the website's patrons, Mr. Okyere Darko and Solonesta.

This will enhance information transfer to the world. To implement this system fully, however, will require intense education of the boys in this endeavour.

    Search engine

You may have also seen that a new, more powerful search engine has been installed on this website which could be used to retrieve any document that has ever appeared on this website. Try it:

    Search prempeh.org

To succeed in your searches, try to use phrases or keywords, instead of questions. Typing in "What was the results of the national science and maths quiz competition against PRESEC?" will not yield you any results. Instead, you can type in "national science and maths quiz" or "quiz results". Remember that search engines, as of the year 2005, are not capable of answering questions like humans do. They can only select information that has already been written on a website and compile them for you. Maybe engines capable of speech will be designed by the IT industry in the near future to communicate with you, but for now we have to be content with a mute engine capable only of information retrieval.

Instead of typing in the search engine, "Who's the headmaster and how I do reach him?", you should either search with "headmaster's profile" or "headmaster contact" or "school contact." The more specific the name or item, the more likely it is to yield good results.

Also, try to avoid using abbreviations. Instead of using KSM as a keyword, search for sintim or misa.

    Chat room

We have also installed a chat room at the website. Yes, the chat room that has been offline for over 6 years is now back to prempeh.org. You can try it, and ask your friends to meet you there. On the prempeh.org main entrance page, just click on the "Chat room" button to go there.

This also reminds us of a story: A certain lady who is a product of Wesley Girls and who operates an internet cafe in Kumasi, recently accosted us about what makes the children of Kumasi go crazy at her cafe when they rush in to use prempeh.org. This lady, who is married to an Amanfoo, asked why even the little boys and girls who are not affiliated with Prempeh argue and fight all day over the site at her cafe. "What's on that website that make children behave this way?" Our response was, "Well, its good for (your) business, isn't it?" She smiled. When she started visiting the website herself, she understood the children's passion.

Now that we have a chatroom installed, it will inspire more kids from Kumasi to interact with kids around the world in real-time.

June 18, 2005. POSTSCRIPT: It has just been brought to our attention that the new chat room, which is written in java, is not accessible to most of the people in Ghana, as most Ghanaian computers are not java-enabled. We are working on creating a new user-friendly chatroom which will be universally accessible.

    Email addresses

The new prempeh.org email address system, which the Sofoline boys have been demanding for a long time, has just been launched. Those who already have email accounts can always check their email by going to prempeh.org/webmail. You will be prompted for a username and password. For the username, type in your full email address and then enter a password.

You will then be taken to the mail management page, where you will check your mail there. There are two mail carriers to choose from - Horde or Squirrelmail. Explore the features of both to see which you like better and use it. The second one that you do not use is still yours and will remain there should you decide to use that in the future. At the mail management page, you can change your password, and set up other features.

We are in the proccess of setting email addresses and passwords for the whole school, which is a tedious proccess. The following is the tentative email address release dates for all the houses:

    June 3rd Freeman
    June 6th Opoku Ware
    June 10th Serwah and Aggrey
June 12th Prefects and Teaching Staff
June 15th Osei Tutu and G'berg
June 20th the rest of the houses

This schedule is predicated upon prompt release of the school roster to the website management team. Notice that any delay in releasing the rosters to us will cause a delay in generating email addresses for the students.

If your house's turn has not come and you need to get an email before then, you can email us for a free email account. All Amanfoo can also email us for a free email account.

All email addresses will be generated with the student's surname and first initials. For example, the email address of the (ineffective) Senior Prefect will be konadukk@prempeh.org and his (equally ineffective) deputies will be obengk@prempeh.org and obengso@prempeh.org. VY Gyabaah already has his: gyabaahvy@prempeh.org.

If at a later date, students want to generate email addresses based on their nicknames, that will also fine. If there are, for example, ten Kofi Manu's at Prempeh, then the addresses will be manuk1@prempeh.org, manuk2@prempeh.org, manuk3@prempeh.org and so on. If a eleventh Kofi Manu is admitted to form 1 next year, his address will be manuk11@prempeh.org.

If students want to create email addresses based on their positions, such as seniorprefect@prempeh.org, chapelprefect@prempeh.org or scienceclubprez@prempeh.org, that will also be accepted. However, keep in mind that the prefects and club presidents of the future may want to use the same addresses. To this end, we suggest that the years should be made part of such addresses. For example, the current Senior Prefect can have seniorprefect2004@prempeh.org, so that his successor can have seniorprefect2005@prempeh.org, or dhallprefect2004@prempeh.org.

The email addresses of all the entire campus community will be placed in a directory at this website; those who gain admission to Prempeh's form one class next academic year would get email addresses even before they arrive on campus in September. The headmaster could also communicate with the entire student body during the vacation via email.

    New design

Over the years, the boys of Sofoline have resisted all attempts to redesign prempeh.org's front page, saying that the stool in the centre of the page is the best the website could ever be. Since they feel nothing could be better, they have vigorously discouraged us from introducing any new design. The last design we came up with was voted down.

They even showed their confidence in this current design by taking the stool for the cover of the 2004 edition the school magazine, also called The Stool, which has become the most popular magazine edition of all time.

But we have a surprise in store for the boys, which we will present for a vote very soon.

    Patrons and CRC

Prempeh.org is pleased to announce that the College website will now have two Sofoline teachers to act as patrons.

The student body needs to be working on their website directly, and since the senior webmasters and coordinators are not always around to guide them on campus, a team of two outstanding tutors will oversee the activities of the website and act as patrons. These tutors are needed to guide the young students as to material propriety for the website and to ensure that the young boys present good image-projecting material on the website.

A College Relations Committee (CRC), similar to a University's Public Relations Office (PRO), which will serve as official relay Board for information transfer between the College and the external world, is to be set up by the Patrons. This Committee, which will comprise of representatives of all Houses, will present the news to the world directly.

We are happy to announce that the social science teacher, Mr. Solomon Nti (SOLONESTA), who loves the website more than anyone, and the current Ashanti Teacher of the Year and National Teacher of the Year runner-up, Mr. Okyere Darko are the website patrons. With their wisdom and guidance, it is expected that the boys of Sofoline will continue to enjoy their website. You may recall that Mr. Alfred Okyere Darko, Social Studies teacher and OW House master who won Ashanti Best Teacher Award earlier last year, placed second in the nationwide "Best Teacher Award contest." His name is one that is associated with respectability, and we appreciate him so much.

    Other items

As you read this, we are installing more interesting items for the website; we are working around to the clock to enhance the browsing experience for Amanfoo. Watch this space as we enhance this website day after day.

    Have you noticed?

Have you noticed that the www is not necessary when pointing your browser to to prempeh.org? Simply type in prempeh.org instead of www.prempeh.org. The www is optional.
