Amanfoo Newsbriefs

January 2007:

Ghana’s Ambassador to South Korea, Mr. Kwadwo Afoakwa Sarpong is dead. Mr. Sarpong, 65, died in the early hours of Wednesday in Seoul after falling into coma for about two months.

Ambassador Sarpong

The late ambassador, an old boy of Prempeh College in Kumasi, was Ghana’s Ambassador to Mali during the first four years of the Kufuor-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He was however posted to South Korea as the President’s representative after the 2004 general elections.

A family spokesperson, who confirmed the report on grounds of anonymity, said his death was a big blow to the entire family and nation in general.

A source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and NEPAD, which only confirmed the envoy’s death, would not give any other details.

Mr. Sarpong, a native of Essieniepong, a farming community near Ejisu in the Ashanti region, left behind a wife, Constance and five children.

A classic inspirational story of how one man responded to adversity. A truly powerful story that depicts modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness and his unruffled adaptation to misery and uneasiness.

Kwaku Freduah Agyeman - A Tribute

By Yaw Twum-Barima

Kwaku, Damirifa due, due ne amanehunu!!!

It was with shock and sadness that I heard of the passing of Kwaku Agyeman (Serwaa House, 1962 -67). Kwaku was a very dynamic and visible member of the 1B to 3B class and later 4L to 5L. His nickname behind his back was staccato! He was all of 5ft 2ins tall and carried close to 180 lbs of muscles!! The news of Kwaku’ death brings to mind my own vulnerability and a reminder of how uncertain life is for all of us. I can recall 2 vivid events that make me think of Kwaku.....

February 12, 2002:

December 11, 2000:

For those of you who haven't heard already this will surely be a shock. I have just read a correspodence in our local paper (Ghanain News, published in Toronto), of the passing of Dr Kwame Ankrah. Most of us remeber him as Ankrah C.K. AS YOU WILL RECALL, kWAME WAS ARGUABLY THE SMARTEST STUDENT to wear the green and blue shirts of Prempeh at least in the 60's and early 70's. The report was from his best friend Kwaku Danso of Freeman house (1961-68).

Kwame apparently gained a PhD in Engineering as well as a Master's in International Law. With his brains he could have done anything!!!! I don't have many details but I understand he suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and passed away on Oct 31 in Brooklyn, New York. Surely Ghana and the world have lost a great human being!! May he rest in peace.

Sincerely,
Dr. Yaw Twum-Barimah,
The 1st Health Prefect.

November 11, 2000:

Odehyie Amoako Atta Boakye, one of the Amanfoo Royals, junior brother of the late Okyenhene Osagyefuo Kuntunkununku II, has also left us. His obituary is below:

March 28, 2000:

Now that the shooting of Rev. Pearson is a few weeks away and Madonna's husband-to-be has accepted Gyimah's invitation to direct the film, nominations are pullulating for the Lord Exchequer of Britain to send an official request to the Queen to knight Prempeh College's first Headmaster, Rev. S.N. Pearson for the role he played in helping establish Ghana's Royal College. The Lord Exchequer of Britain will come to this site and learn more about the Great Prempeh College and its impact on our society, and hopefully, the Queen will come to Prempeh's site just before the Knighthood conferment to learn more about the College and the man she will be having dinner with.

The shooting of the documentary begins in April. The team is first rate and we've got a publisher interested. The photographer, who shot the poster and stills for the film Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is on board. The films director is the husband-to-be for Madonna. The cameraman is incredible too. He's (Japanese/English). The photographer providing prints for the national newspapers in a pre-publicity drive worked as the official photographer on the British smash film "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels". And if that rings no bells, the film made it's director so famous that he is engaged to the singer Madonna.

All over the UK, Amanfoo are so satisfied and joyous. The anticipation of a BBC Broadcast date has sent their enthusiasm upsurging to an all-time high! All over the UK eye-witnesses have reported what is becoming a Bacchanalian scenery, fraught with some Jerry Springer-like romanticism. There may even be a Hollywood-style film opening for Amanfoo.

Maybe it is the hallmark of a great institution, or perhaps worthy champions are simply blessed with greater chunks of good fortune in moments of adversity. In an epoch shaken by the so many disruptive shocks-shocks, brought on by an upheaval of values, which has sent our nation's educational standards crushing to its nadir, it is inspiring to see one College towering above the rest...maintaining their transcendent status around the globe.

A possible 23 and a half million people (a third of the British nation) will learn about Nana Prempeh's school on their television screens, and since Gyimah is putting www.prempeh.org all over the credits and is revolving the whole project around the College website, as well as featuring and profiling the website (even the prints for the national newspapers in a pre-publicity drive has prempeh.org written all over them), tens of millions of people will come crashing to this website at once to learn more about Prempeh College Brahmins.

Even before the April shooting date we have already started receiving visitors from the UK end - most of them film and movie luminaries yearning to become a part of this great project. Nearly every 15 minutes, a person from a any.uk, ac.uk or co.uk domain enter this website. It looks as if Gyimah has revitalized the once-bleak UK Amanfoo Group.

When the Knighthood nomination letters start pouring into the Office of the Lord Exchequer of Britain (equivalent of US Attorney General), the man will certainly visit this website and take some notes alongside a copy of the film for furnishing the Queen who will then, hopefully in Spring 2001, confer a Knighthood upon our first Headmaster.

Anticipatively, when that happens, the then President of Ghana, Mr. JA Kufuor - who actually enjoyed a few months of the Rev. Pearson admninistration at Prempeh - will grace the occasion as Ghana's main plenipotentiary!

When that happens, count on the ever-changing Amanfoo website to deliver and defend the green and yellow flag of Mother Prempeh, in line with our Suban ne Nimdee birthright. Just make sure you leave us a self-addressed stamped envelope so we can ship you some fish and chips.

Always at your service,
Harold Ofori

March 4, 2000:

The 1979/80 Asst. Senior Prefect, Kwaku Berchi-Antwi (Archimedes) of Pearson House and the best O' Level candidate for 1977/78 who died from his previously diagnosed illness of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma on February 15th, 2000 in Kumasi, was burried by Amanfoo today.

At the time of his death, he was a brilliant Electrical Engineer with special interest in Computers and ran a private Enterprise. He was survived by his wife and 2 year-old son. He was laid in state and finally buried earlier today at which our Amanfoo brethren made a significant showing to mourn with the bereaved family.

He meant a lot to us and a lot of present Amanfoo in the US received some 'tutoring' at one point or the other, spurring them on to admissions to top US Universities. May his Blessed Soul rest in Perfect Peace.

Most Regretfully,
KOFI APPIAH, MD.

Bereavement!

Amanfuo,

I just received a call from a fellow Amanfuo in Accra and sad to report of the death of Kwaku Berchi-Antwi (Archimedes) of Pearson House (1973-1980) and former ASP (79/80). He apparently succumbed to a bout with cancer. I do not have all the details yet of type of cancer. May his soul rest in peace.

Damirifa Due!!

Regards,
Kofi Acheampong

September 15 1999:

Isaac Fordjour (from Dunkwa), an old boy of Prempeh College (Guggisberg House, 1970-1975) has died suddenly in Toronto on September 14. His family reported that Mr Fordjour complained of stomach ache on 13th of September for which he was given some medicine at the hospital and sent home. He died the following morning.

Mr Fordjour's death brings to 5 the number of Ghanaians who have died in Toronto within the last 4 months. This include a ten year old girl who was murdered at her home while the mother was at work.

The rapid death of Ghanaians, an unusual occurance, is causing a lot of concern within the Ghanaian community. While some dismiss this as a natural phenomenon within a large population as the Ghanaian community has grown to be, others feel there is too much stress and pressure for many Ghanaians to handle over here and that it was probably time we started retracing our footsteps back home. Still, many think Ghanaians, especially the men, do not take good care of their health. For example, many fail to have regular medical check-ups. Thus, we are mostly walking dead men slowly been struck inch by inch by dangerous ailments such as High Blood Pressure, Hepatitis 'B', Cancer, etc, etc.

The funeral rites will be held on Saturday, October 2, in Toronto, before the body is sent to Ghana.

Senior Fordjour was survived by a wife and four children.
