Reinstate Asenso Okyere- Legon staff

Posted: May 17 2005

Pressure keeps increasing on the Council of the University of Ghana over its decision to suspend the Vice Chancellor Kwadwo Asenso Okyere.

At its meeting last week, the council asked professor Asenso Okyere to step aside to ensure un-obstructed investigations into grade fixing and exams malpractices.

The decision to ask Prof. Asenso-Okyere to step aside was, according to the University's council, taken to avoid a conflict of interest situation because of the alleged involvement of his son in the scandal.

But some student groups in the university have questioned the rationale behind the decision.

Administrative staff of the university has also spoken out against the decision to suspend the vice chancellor.

Spokesperson for a group calling itself concerned staff and students of the university; Kwame Osei Bempah Hwere says the council must come clean on the matter.

The group also contends that if the council feels that the Vice-Chancellor must go at all cost, then it will be equally fair for the entire council to bow out in shame for failing to exercise their supervisory role over the administration of the university.

Other student groups contend that the move to oust Prof. Asenso-Okyere is calculated to tarnish his image due to his stern leadership style.
