Dossier: Legon Scandal (Amanfoo family in Crisis)

May 2005

Dr. Asenso It turns out that most of the leakages examinations at the University of Ghana, Legon has been traced to a Prempeh product, Kwadwo Tibiri Asenso-Okyere, son of the University's don, Senior Asenso-Okyere and his Owarean and Mfantsipim friends. Kwadwo has confessed that he even sold examination papers in the University-owned residence of his father.

Kwadwo is the principal connection man on campus, in terms of conniving with corrupt University officials and exam attendants into leaking exams, especially for the benefit of premedicine students who are battling each other for the few seats in the medical school. He was responsible for the leakages of four papers in the last semester's exams, which he sold for between ¢ 300,000 to ¢ 1 million to his clients mostly foreign students of Nigerian stock and their rich Ghanaian counterparts.

Read the actual transcript of his interview with the University's Mfodwo Committee set up to investigate the corruption.

Confessions of a deviant son

Then the Council of the University of Ghana asked Professor Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere, Vice-Chancellor, "to step aside with effect from 8 June 2005 until the committees set up to deal with disciplinary issues raised by the Mfodwo Committee submit their reports and Council ratifies their recommendations for appropriate action." The Council concluded that since the scandal involved the Vice-Chancellor's own son, he could not be trusted to take firm control and deal fairly with the matter. So they asked him to TEMPORARILY step aside, while investigations continued.

"On the basis of further submissions made by the Vice-Chancellor and the very open discussion of issues raised, Council noted that the Vice-Chancellor, as the Academic and Administrative Head and Chief Disciplinary Officer of the University, accepted full responsibility for the various weaknesses and lapses identified by the Mfodwo Committee as factors that facilitated the malpractices associated with the 2004 - 2005 First Semester Examinations."

However, because his SILENT ENEMIES wanted to pursue their own agenda, they decided to truncate the Vice-Chancellor's tenure in the University's highest office. They sacked him and elevated his deputy to the position and appointed someone to take take the deputy's spot. His enemies were in control here. Even though he was only asked to proceed on leave while the University conducted their investigations, he was later told "not to ever return as Vice-Chancellor." As the truth later came out, those who wanted the job were using the adult-son's mistakes as a fodder to rid the University of its don.

He then filed for a review of the decision by the Council, and Legon students raised a strong protest and demonstration in his honour, warning the University Council to rescind its decision.

“We want to reiterate our earlier opinion that it was wrong and against natural justice to call for his resignation, because his adult son was involved in the examination leakage,” he intimated. To us, his son was old enough to bear the consequences of his actions, as he has assured fairness and transparency, by allowing the committee to give his son whatever punishment was due him. “If Asenso would interfere with the investigations of the Committee, he would have done that right from the onset.”

The University's staff also were outraged by the sacking of the Vice-Chancellor and called for his reinstatement.

A Ghana News Agency poll showed that a majority of the students wanted the Vice-Chancellor to be retain his job.

Finally, under pressure from the general public, the University Council budged, asking the Vice-Chancellor to return but step aside from June 8th onward while the University reviews the Committee's reports.
