THE JOKE OF THE MILLENIUM

By Dr. William Boakye Akoto, G'berg '74

I have seen to my amazement and amusement at the same time a calender that has been designed and printed for sale by the North American Branch of the National Destruction Party (NDC) of Ghana. The calender has the title: GREAT LEADERS OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM and guess what picture stares at you: President Rawlings, President Clinton, Hillary and Nana Konadu holding hands during the Clintons' visit to Ghana last year.

1. If anyone had doubts that Bill Clinton's visit to Ghana was so important to Rawlings and the NDC and would probably end up as the icing on the cake of their 20 years of misrule, he/she has the answer. It is amazing that a guy who started as a CASTRO and a GADDAFFI should end up measuring his success as a leader against the likes of an American president. Maybe, to be fair, since I don't know whether the design of the calender had Rawling's approval my criticism here should be directed at his supporters.

2. The designers of the calender are not even smart. There is an on-going debate on whether the New Millennium started on Jan. 1, 2000, or should start Jan. 1, 2001. Granting that the New Millennium started Jan. 1, 2000, we are only 3 months into it. So, how can anyone proclaim two presidents as the "great leaders of the new millennium." We have 9 months to go into the first year of the new Millennium (agreeing with the popular theory) and we already have a group of people declaring two presidents as great leaders of the new millennium. How low and propagandist can one get?
