The Great Teachers of Prempeh College

Mr. Gyimah
Senior Housemaster, 1970s

Written by Kwabena Osei-Boaten, Serwah '79 (1979 DHP)

A real descent man, that we can never have time to describe his dedication to students and the College. During those school days we could never understand this guy, but today he is one of the highly esteemed teachers that we can ever think of. He was the senior House Master, made sure students were always on time to class, roll call, dining hall, siesta, assembly hall, bed e.t.c. This man had incredible energy to oversee that House masters took care of all these issues. He took time to know every student, especially those that we considered as 'bad boys', i.e. the smokers. He sacrificed the pleasure of sleeping with his wife at night, only to make sure that boys were in their dormitories and not at the discos. Now that some of us are parents, we can only look back with respect and admiration for such a devoted and dedicated man who made sure that the unwritten agreement between the Parent and the College to supervise the kids were followed to the letter.

The sad part of Mr. Gyimah's story is that students saw his action as too extreme, and humiliated him with all kinds of insult. This writer cannot remember the exact detail of the students action, but in the end he bowed out of Prempeh College. This man is an unsung hero, in my opinion, he was the pillar behind Mr. Osai's success, but seldom do we recognize such men.
