The Great Teachers of Prempeh College

Mr. Reuben T. Sackey
Headmaster, 1985-96

Mr. Sackey was known as a "resuscitator." He was called on from Tarkwa Secondary School to resuscitate Ghana Secondary School in Koforidua, and soon after was sent in to revive Prempeh College. The Ghana education Service reposed a lot of trust in him. When he was merely a teacher in 1960, the then-Headmaster Rev. A.D. Lewis called him and prophesized that he (Sackey) will become the Headmaster of Prempeh College someday. A strict disciplinarian known for talking very fast, Mr. Sackey introduced "PREMPEH AHOBREASEE" (HUMILITY). He was also the man who brought back the old traditions of Prempeh--The Speech & Prize Giving Days, The School Magazine, etc. Before he arrived, Remedial and Vacation Classes had been introduced. These classes brought a whole spectrum of irresponsible students to the school, thus making the environment not conduscive to studying. He abolished the vacation classes immediately upon his arrival. He was the headmaster who endured the most hardships. It was during his reign that the Transkei and Nigeria bonanza was taking place. The Nigerian economy was "booming" and as a results many of our teachers had left to seek greener pastures in Lagos. The duty fell on Mr. Sackey to find replacement teachers to fill the positions and help prepare our candidates for Ordinary and Advanced Levels. He recruited professors from the University of Science and Technology to strengthen the Sixth Form. So successful was he that in the first year of his reign, Prempeh won the West African Advanced Level International Award . Prempeh won the Ordinary Level Award three more times under Sackey.

He was noted for driving the school truck to Accra almost every week, to beg the Education Service for funds to complete the abandoned and uncompleted Prempeh Library. Sackey also worked hard to get Prempeh College a school bus. We won both of our National Quiz championship trophy under him.
