SRC Report 2002/03

At long last the Prempeh College S.R.C. is born again after donkey years of wandering in the desert of virtual non-existence teetering at the brink of collapse. After clouds of problems accumulated and myriad grievance mushroomed, coupled with the continuous student awareness of the multi-angled and hydra-headed problems, it became necessary beyond circumstances to rejuvenate and re-establish the council after the previous College administration put a spoke in the wheel of our predecessors.

Like all the other local councils our motto is “S.R.C., for the emancipation of student through dialogue and the philosophy of non-violence”. Our aims will forever be as enshrined in article “3” of the constitution.

The rebirth occurred on 31st January 2003, and the invisible hand of God handed down the hot inextinguishable coal of leadership to us. Simply put, we are the pioneer executives of the council. The house currently has a membership of 84-class representative and 9 executives, 2 of which by the constitution are ex-officio members. In the heat of problems, the council has sessions every fortnight and during such sessions the enthusiasm shown is “for your eyes-only”, as we believe in the maxim, “punctuality is the soul of business”.

The S.R.C. has been instrumental in the revival of the Wednesday class meeting, a period of time when students meet in their respective classes to discuss and articulate pertinent issues. Sensing the ignorance and misguided conception students have about the council, the executives found it prudent to establish an educational committee. Their duties among others to educate students on the concept of S.R.C. and general matters such as Fundamental Human Rights and duties, current affairs and to encourage the use of dialogue as the possible means to end hooliganism and boyism”.

This year’s students week was held from 10th to 16th of February, under the theme, “the upsurge of violence at inter-school / colleges Sports Festivals, the way forward”. There were lectures and symposia at the GNAT Hall. Later during the week an intra zonal quiz in which we came tops thereby booking a place in the intra zonal finals. The whole week was crowned with a memorable church service at St. Louis Secondary School.

If you want to see democracy at it grass root visit Prempeh College, where the S.R.C. in collaboration with the prefectorial body had the first ever-open forum with our Headmaster. This made practical “article 5, clause 3c” of the constitution which states “the local S.R.C. shall periodically meet with education authorities to exchange ideas.” It was based on Voltaire’s principle, “I disapproved of what you say, but I will defend to death your right to say it”. A joint prefect-S.R.C. meeting was also arranged by the council executives “to assess the efficiency of the prefectorial body as stipulated in Article 5, clause 2a” of the constitution.

Lastly, there is no gainsaying that the headmaster, our chief patron is worthy of our sincerest gratitude for his unflinching support. However, it must be said in passing that owing to our short life span as executives, all our successes, however little they may be, are essential in providing fresh stimulus in laying a solid foundation for posterity - our greatest critic.
