US coach visits Ahmed

Monday, February 13, 2006

National Player of the Year, Ahmed Amoako, who has been invited to the national team of under-17s, presenting the trophy to the then Regional Director of Education, who is an Amanfoo, at his office at the Ministries.
Prempeh College soccer captain, Ahmed Deedat Amoako, the reigning national footballer of the year, recently met a renownwed coach from the US who visited him at Sofoline.

Coach Oliver, who is the head coach of Virginia Tech -- the same school that recruited Chibsah -- came to Ghana with the intention of finding a Prempeh player and decided he would not leave until he finds a Prempeh player.

Seven Prempeh players, including some recent graduates, are being targeted but Ahmed is the most important.

He first became interested in Ahmed when he asked the Ghanaians on the Virginia Tech team, "which player is the most outstanding and important in Ghana?" They unanimously pointed to Prempeh's captain as the one who could join forces with them and help them win a national title at Virginia Tech.

Coach Oliver received tremendous help from his friend, Prempeh alum and Virginia resident Senior Sarfo Kantanka (Class of '64), who guided him and directed him to Ahmed's profile at prempeh.org.

Coach Oliver said that Ahmed's interview, particularly the discovery that the utility player wants to pursue higher education, was so encouraging.

A prempeh.org email was subsequently set up for Ahmed to communicate with the coach last year.

2 Virginia Tech players with Prempeh's Manchester United (middle). Wearing the number 11 jersey is Joshua, who comes from Accra; Owarean Patrick Asafo Agyei is wearing number 12. Patrick and Prempeh's Apio played for Kaaseman FC in Kumasi, the team owned by Owarean coach Orlando. These guys suggested that Ahmed be recruited to join them.

Ahmed is required to pass the SAT and SSSCE before admission. The only difficulty with this is that the season starts in early August for Virginia Tech and Ahmed is not expected to finish school until probably July. Will the the new WASCE (which is replacing the SSSCE) be completed by then, let alone have a score report ready by July? Moreover, Prempeh will be defending the national football trophy around May/June.

Prempeh.org extends our congratulations to Ahmed, a loyal friend who sleeps on prempeh.org souvenir sheets.
