Pearson-Aggrey preview

Friday, July 29, 2005

This weekend's first match between Pearson and Aggrey Houses is considered a very big match-up. Pearson, as we all know, are the champs of the school. They won the inter-house gala competition just about a month ago, and they have very outstanding players. The Pearsonians are so go good and full of confidence.

But Aggrey is full of hope. When Pearson won the inter-house gala, Aggrey's best player, and Ghana's national player of the year, Ahmed Deedat Amoako, was on a national assignment with the national team and could not participate. In fact, he refereed some of the inter-house matches. Now, Ahmed is ready to join his fellow Aggreyans in trying to defeat the mighty Pearson house.

School goalkeeper Otu will be in goal for Aggreyans, and he is outstanding as a keeper capable of leading the national under-17 side. His only weakness is keeping penalty shots out of the net. In the school team's games, he is the first-choice keeper, but any time a game appears to be heading into penalty shoot-out, the Prempeh coach brilliantly takes him out of the game, and substitute Freeman's Enerst Opoku in his place.

The Great Pearson boys watching TV in their Common Room after last weekend's games when prempeh.org paid them a visit. The very moment we got there, the boys who were bare-chested got up and put their shirts on, saying they "are going to be on the net."
But this is a league, and there will be no penalty kicks here.

Ahmed Amoako's claim this week that he will NOT be able to score against Pearson is a testament to the greatness of the Pearson team. Ahmed swore last weekend to score 10 goals in his first match, promising to outshine Ramseyer's Eric Goloe and Butler's Paul Manu, who scored a hat trick. But when Ahmed was reminded by Manu about his opponents in the first match, he responded by saying, "okay, I may not be able to score against Pearson, but I will score 10 goals against the likes of OT House."

Indeed the Pearson boys are so great. Their left winger, Twum Barimah, may be Ghana's best left winger since Kofi Abbrey; he's good enough to lead any premiership team.

The stadium will be filled to capacity when these two sides meet tomorrow.

Some great Pearson soccer players from the past include Senior Kwadwo Kore (now known as Kumawuhene Nana Asumadu Sakyi II), Alexander Fredua Agyemang (who became Akyem King Kununtununku II, now deceased), Senior Safo S.K., who is a Member of Parliament for Mampong and Senior W. Asomaning (University of Ghana Faculty of Science) and Navy Commander Kwapong.

Serwah's Senior Kwadwo Mpianin (President Kufuor's Chief of Staff) and "Senior Oslo" (who became Mamponghene Dasebre Osei Bonsu II) found their Pearson opponents very tough in those days (early 1960s).
