Headmaster: Life goes on
Tuesday, May 10, 2005
Headmaster Owusu-Achiaw has said to the boys of Sofoline that "Life still goes on."
Barely a week since our NSMQ
squad crushed out of the Science and Maths quiz,
life on campus still goes on unabated.
The headmaster of the school has asked each and
everyone to put the defeat behind him and concentrate on the future.
The boys arrived at the College on reopening day with downcast faces because of the
defeat. This year's team, which was widely acclaimed as the best ever, panicked on the national
stage and lost in the quarter final. They have thereby shown us that it takes more than
intelligence to excel in the Quiz.
Prempeh needs to start bringing Form 2 boys to the quiz so that
they can muster the courage needed to succeed. If next year's likely contestants had been there
this year to witness this battle, it would have alleviated the anxiety and pressure
that comes with their appearance on the national television under this stressful circumstance. Indeed it is imperative for
our headmaster to heed these words.
When we suggested to the Prempeh Quiz masters in Accra that such a policy must
be put in place, they directed prempeh.org to approach the Headmaster directly with this question, since all such pleadings
has fallen on deaf ears so far. The Headmaster has been reluctant to support such a policy
because of "lack of funds." But that is shocking, because lesser endowed schools in Kumasi do the same successfully.
In fact, we were informed that the Headmaster was reluctant to give the school bus to the team for their Accra trip
because of perceived problems with purchasing petrol. What? Will our Board of Directors be so cruel to condemn our headmaster
if he takes money from our school coffers and use it for this purpose?
These are issues that need to be discussed in the coming weeks.
