National Science & Maths Quiz 2005

Prempeh loses

Thursday, May 5, 2005

The saddest thing has happened today. The Kings College has lost to Ghana Secondary Technical School of Takoradi in the quarter finals of the National Science and Maths Quiz competition at the nation's capital.

Prempeh started confidently but got their first question wrong, as usual, while our opponents answered their first question correctly. The boys in green bounced back and took the lead to finish the first round with a 21-17 lead. At the end of round 2, Prempeh still led 42-38. In round 3, a Chemistry question was given as "Problem of the Day" which Asiamah went to the blackboard and solved. We were awarded 4 points out of a maximum 10, while our opponents earned only a point for their "Problem of the Day."

Despite all this, the SecTechans came to lead us in Round 4 by four points, 63-59. This is because our boys, who shocked everyone in the first round by answering all their riddles correctly, achieved the exact opposite this time around. They got all the riddles wrong, while our opponents proved unbeatable in the riddles category. They were leading us by one point before the start of the riddles, but went on to earn 5 points from the riddles. They answered all the riddles at the first clue. Our boys missed out on the riddles and ended up losing by 10 points. It shocked even the Owarean spectators around, who were eagerly expecting Prempeh to cruise to the semi final.

OWASS, meanwhile, easily defeated Bolgatanga Secondary School and thereby moves on to the semi final to face PRESEC tomorrow. The winner of OWASS/PRESEC will face the winner of GSTS vs. St.Peters/St.Francis matchup.

Congratulations to our conquerors GSTS and good luck to them. But we prefer that OWASS win it all. If the Owareans win it -- and it appears they can win it given that PRESEC barely survived Kumasi Anglican -- it will mean that two Ashanti schools have 5 trophies between them, which will be unprecendented for any Region.

Though we are no longer in the competition, we will still take our laptop to the Quiz Hall in the final to provide a live commentary of the show if the Owareans are in the final.

Good luck to the Owareans.
