Interview with Prefects Council

Tuesday, November 29, 2005
posted: Sunday, December 4, 2005

Prempeh.org interviewed the Prefects on Tuesday November 29, 2005, but opted to delay the publication until the storm calmed a bit on campus. We hereby present the Prefects complaints.

prempeh.org: Good evening, Seniors.

Prefects Council: Good evening Senior

prempeh.org: How are you doing?

Prefects Council: By His grace everything is okay.

The Great Prefects of 2005/06

prempeh.org: So what is the latest on campus?

Prefects Council: The latest on campus is that the headmaster and his staff do not care about the welfare of the students and that is causing more harm to the school. We the prefects are not also respected at all. It will surprise you to know that, when students are punished by prefects and masters are passing by, they just tell the students to leave and stop obeying the prefect. This is making the work of the prefects very difficult.

prempeh.org: What did you do about it being the Prefects?

Prefects Council: We informed the senior housemaster about it but he never bothered.

prempeh.org: Why do you think he never bothered?

Prefects Council: We can't tell but what we know is that the senior housemaster who is supposed to be on the side of students, serve as our father and help us resolve our problems is not on good talking terms with the headmaster. This has made matters worse as he cannot even tell the head what worries the students.

prempeh.org: What do you then do?

Prefects Council: That is why we put down our badges. If the school is not going to respect us, then we must put down our badges since the work is tedious and without the support of the masters, our aims cannot be achieved.

prempeh.org: Do you think that is the right approach?

Prefects Council: We feel that is the best for the prefects council. We sat down and planned this. We cannot air our views to anyone except the senior housemaster and he is also not in a position to help. The only way out is to put our badges down and denounce our positions or to let the whole Amanfoo fraternity know through the website what is happening.

prempeh.org: Has the putting down of badges help resolve the problem?

Prefects Council: It has done more than we anticipated. It kept the masters in a meeting yesterday and the masters all want to sit us down and advise us. That is a positive sign. At least our grievances have been heard now.

prempeh.org: What are some of your grievances?

Prefects Council: Not only the disrespect accorded prefects, senior. There are so many things worrying the students of this great school. There are some students who haven't got their white shirts as of now and they are in form three. They paid for all these when they were in form one. We know very well that every school has a problem. There are problems with every school in Ghana but our major probelm is the fact that the headmaster always gives empty promises. He tells us that it is going to be done, we then understand and sit down awaiting the results only to find nothing. Some people are in their third year now. There are some books that have not been given to people that they paid for in first year. They are now about to graduate and the headmaster will keep their money.

The students pay 30,000 for internet every term but the connectivity is nothing to write home about. We used the internet for about a week and we were then told there has been a probelm and the problem has been there ever since. We were told the webmaster of prempeh.org wanted to help resuscitate the internet on campus so he should sit with the administration and come and do someting about it. There are some cracks in the buildings which the headmaster does not care about. We have told him that it is a death trap but he has not said anything. We do not want any student to die before that is rectified, senior. There are more that when we decide to say will keep us here for hours.

prempeh.org: What was the response when you hand over your badges?

Prefects Council: The student body were amazed but we want them to know that we will forever serve and fight for their rights.

prempeh.org: We were told you apologised for what you did today?

Prefects Council: We were forced to do it. They now want to put all the blame on us that the approach was bad. They also tell us that we are instigating the students to riot and that is out of the question. When you ask me to apologise and it is not from my heart, what do you gain from it?

prempeh.org: Do you think it is going to affect the speech day?

Prefects Council: That is what the headmaster is afraid of, that we will let the cat out of the bag on that day. It affects nothing here. We just want our problems to be solved and that is all.

prempeh.org: What is your next line of action?

Prefects Council: We were told today that the housemaster of Butler house, Mr. Agyekum has threatened to sack his house prefect. We want the administration to know that should any prefect be sacked, all of us are going to again denounce our positions. We are worth more than the treatment they are giving us.

prempeh.org: What is your opinion about the headmaster?

Prefects Council: Let's save that for now. We will talk about that after our term of office when we are handing over (if possible). For now, we want him to know that he can not ruin the school for us. We have thousands of old boys who will support us in this battle, we know.

prempeh.org: What is your message for Amanfoo?

Prefects Council: Let's fight to save our school. It is ours and not any master. We will forever bear the Amanfoo name.
