The Pearson-Osae Appreciation Lectures

Ghana@50 Pearson-Osae Lectures Held

Saturday, November 03, 2007

This year’s edition of the annual Pearson-Osae Appreciation Lectures was held on Friday, 2nd November, 2007 at the Akosua Addai Banquet Hall of the plush Hotel De Georgia in Kumasi.

The topic for this year was ‘GHANA AS I SEE IT IN THE NEXT FIFTY YEARS’ and the speakers were Mr. Kwame Pianim, an Economic Consultant and Chairman of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission and the Very Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, the Head of Department of Religion of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

The occasion was chaired by the Most Reverend Dr. Snr. Robert Aboagye-Mensah, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana.

The National President of the Prempeh College Old Students’ Association in his welcome, said the Pearson – Osae Lecture was instituted in 1998 as part of the activities leading to the Golden Jubilee of the College in 1999. The aim was to honour Rev. S.N. Pearson for his pioneering role in the establishment of the College. Again, it was also to honour the first Ghanaian Headmaster, T.A. Osea for sustaining the efforts of his predecessors.

Another objective was to honour members of staff, both teaching and non-teaching whilst they were still alive. Since then, the lectures are held annually, rotating between Kumasi and Accra.

This year, awards were presented to Ambassador C.O.C. Amate, former tutor; Ambassador J. G. Amamoo, former tutor; and Mrs. Bannerman, former matron.

Mrs. Bannerman, who is 93 years old, had her award received on her behalf by her daughter. She said she paid her first visit to Sofoline and she really felt connected to Prempeh. The former tutors expressed their gratitude for the recognition given them and said it really came to them as a big surprise. Ambassador Amamoo, encouraged the youth gathered never to allow any coup to succeed since the nation had come a long way in building its democracy.

There was a live band to entertain all present after the end of the lectures.

Dr. Osei Kuffour, Amanfoo National President.
