54TH SPEECH DAY & 1ST GRADUATION CEREMONY - 2003

REPORT DELIVERED BY SENIOR PREFECT MASTER GYABAAH VICTOR YEBOAH DURING THE 54TH SPEECH & PRIZE GIVING DAY, DEC. 6, 2003
Rev. Chairman, Honourable Minister of the Interior, the Regional Minister, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Nananom, Directors of Education and Heads of Institutions, wise Head of the College, members of Staff, Amanfoo, fellow students, all Protocol observed, ladies and Gentlemen, the instability of times always ushers us into new and different occurrences. This therefore serves as the major reason why gracefully, the 54th Speech and Prize Giving day is here with us bringing together all stakeholders of this honorable College. A pleasant morning to you all.

Fifty four years since the establishment of Mother Prempeh is something worth writing home about and I always get exhilarated whenever I sit to reflect on the uncomparable achievements of the College. Our motto which imbued in us the love of God continually rings "Suban ne Nimdee," making every Amanfoo a knowledgeable, disciplined, Christian gentleman.

Gyabaah delivering his speech Rev. Chairman, Honourable Ministers, one term of being in office as Prefects really throws signals of mighty things to happen. We went through series of effective screenings before we were elected into office; forty-five in all. With a common goal and ambition we are now on track trying all means to curb indiscipline and improve upon the moral standards of students with the enabling backing of the Senior Housemaster and his house staff.

Prep of late is in a very commendable state and because of its significant role in academic excellence, two strong and respectable masters have been chosen to be our Prep masters.

Rev. Chairman, Amanfoo, to declare boldly, if all schools had a supportive headmaster and staff as ours, I believe there would never have been a time when students will go on rampage. The Students Representative Council of the School only resurrected last year during the time of our predecessors from its total decline and ineffectiveness. It is now a very strong body and is being given the due deference. Grievances of students are now being given particular attention through the constant interaction with the headmaster and the organization of fora.

The re-establishment of the “task force” is also in the affirmative to check the rate of indiscipline of students in school since it is only through discipline that a determined student through diligence can achieve his aim in life.

The rest and attention that the human body needs has seen to the introduction of siesta with the duration of an hour five days in a week. A sound mind it is said rest in a sound body and therefore we always get refreshed for our effective prep hours.

This notwithstanding, Rev. Chairman, the continual increment in the number of students has created congestion in all houses in the school. We will therefore be very grateful if the PTA can continue work with the building of the third floor of the Opoku Ware House to aid stop the system of using Common Rooms as dormitories.

With the Board Chairman as a Minister of God, the College being a Christian institution and a substantive Chaplain in residence, the issue of Christianity and service to God cannot be over-emphasized. A sight of what happens here on Sundays is usually very unpleasant. More than half of the student population sit outside on the lawn with a complete mess caused whenever it rains. I therefore stand on behalf of the Chaplaincy and entreat the Presbyterian and Methodist missions and all stakeholders to help speed-up the project on the Assembly Hall complex and an increment in the number of plastic chairs to relieve the first years from the burden of always carrying benches from the dining hall.

Nananom, ladies and gentlemen, the top floor of the main classroom block has developed very serious cracks that can easily lead to the collapse of the building in some time to come. these cracks also leak profusely whenever it rains. Since this serves as a death trap, we request that the able government of our own President Kufuor pick up this rehabilitation work.

Amanfoo of the 1978 year group, we are still counting on you to tackle our water problem for us since we are fast approaching the dry season.

Rev. Chairman, we are privileged to have a generator that supplies us with electricity during power failure. It is however unfortunate that it fails to supply the whole school with the required power. I therefore pray everyone here to contribute his quota to the school by trying all means to let the school have a reliable electricity supply.

Young graduates, respectable batch of 2003, I deem it more than just an honour to call you Amanfoo and the first to be graduated. You are now making a step into another stage of life. This is where you need to understand that life is how you make it and not where you are coming from. It is full of choices and what you choose at this stage can affect your future status. You have received your results, whether good or bad, do not get discouraged. Stay focused for that serves as the womb to accomplishment. You are pregnant with a vision and be determined so that you can deliver prosperity. Be good ambassadors of the Kings College and I know and believe that God will crown all your efforts with success.

The honourable Headmaster, success it is said comes to the man who does today what others could not do yesterday. I stand on behalf of all the final year students to promise you that a year today we will record the best results nationwide, the champions in the National Science & Maths Quiz and the heroes in the inter-colleges and Super Zonals schools competitions.

Mr. Chairman, Honourable Ministers, Nananom, Amanfoo, ladies and gentlemen, let us all be integrated by the bond of unity for “together we build.” May the good Lord shower his blessing upon Prempeh College, upon Ghana and upon all humanity. Thank you for your attention and God bless you.
