  • in 1959 Inter-House Athletics, Pearson House had no one to jump the pole vault? They were on the verge of forfeiting the precious points from the event when young Alex Fredua Agyemang stepped unto the field and grabbed the stick. He jumped for the first time and won the event and the tournament for Pearson. Alex will later go on to become the Akyem King Kuntunkununku II.

  • the Board of Governors after careful deliberations during the 1963/64 school year decided to reword the school motto without sacrificing its essential and original message? The rather long and farmiliar words OBRA PA NE OMAN PA FAPEM (Good character is the foundation of a good nation) was neatly abridged to Suban ne Nimdee (Knowledge and Integrity).

  • the Form 3C Class of 1963 made Prempeh College earn a lot of money when they produced and directed Julius Caesar, a play performed in those days?

  • led by a future Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Aggrey House won the inter-House cricket for 5 successive years (1962-67)? The hard hitting of Dufuor and K.A Gyarteng enabled Prempeh beat Ghana Sec Tech of Takoradi and qualified for the finals. A Dufuor-led Aggrey hockey team placed 3rd in the Inter-House. Dufuor, Adu and Lartey excelled themselves. Dufuor made the school team.

  • Aggrey's Canteen was broken into in 1967 and 18 cedis was stolen? The House went bankrupt and according to their House Prefect-elect, Gausie A. of Lower Six Arts, "all our plans collapsed at once. The investigations we carried out misfired and we gave up."

  • Osei Tutu, "The White House," won the famous Efficiency Cup every term for 5 successive years (1962-67)?

  • in 1967/68 inter-house 100m dash, a form 5 boy in Ramseyer House, Yeboah E.B, gave his house cause to be proud when he was only slightly beaten to second place by no less a person than the legendary "Santo" himself?

  • Serwah House won the Inter-House Cross Country Competition for five straight years (1962-67)?

  • in '66 Regional Hockey Finals, OWASS failed to turn up for the match. Prempeh became automatic winners and the trophy was presented to us at Sofoline?

  • Prempeh College, like any school with a 6th Form was not allowed to offer more than two-thirds of the available places to students from its former Form 5? The remaining one-third had to be given to students from other schools if they made the grade at O-Levels. Lack of appreciation of this fact led to a misunderstanding and even suspicion on the part of students and their parents. Headmaster Osae, the main "suspect," had to explain the government's policy to frustrated parents of Old Boys in November 1967.

  • JSP (Joint School Project) curriculum was introduced in 1963 form 1 Class and that it made transfer admissions into forms 2 to 5 almost impossible at Prempeh? Only 4 schools in the nation were selected to experiment with the JSP program. As a result, Prempeh could only accept transfer students from these other schools, namely, Achimota, Ada Sec. Sch., and Mfantsipim. In 1969, there was a separate A-Level Exams in Mathematics for Prempeh and these other JSP Schools.

  • that Prempeh's HI-Y Club once got themselves into trouble? It all happened in April 1966, when school had reopened for the second term. The genesis of the trouble was simple. The Prempeh College HI-Y Club had printed posters in connection with a dance it was about to hold at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Center City on 7th April. The Headmaster warned the students to omit the name of the school on the poster. They did so. But the Kumasi City Council had sent a letter - in which the name of our school was mentioned - to the Police requisitioning some policemen to keep order during the course of the dance. The Police Superintendent telephoned our Head and asked him whether he knew anything about the proposed dance. The BOMB exploded! An angry Osae cancelled the dance - a good deal of time and money wasted. From that time onwards, the HI-Y Club acted responsibly.

  • in 1963, The Mathematician Allan G. Goodfellow arrived?

  • when the school first opened, students used old newspapers as mattresses for their beds? They lived in wooden structures that had housed a military hospital including a mortuary.

  • PTC (Pioneer Tobacco Company) donated 180 cedis to meet the cost of the Prizes to be handed to the students of the 1971 Speech Day?

  • Aggrey House newspaper, The Eagle Announcer, was the most renowned House paper in those days?

  • the 1969/70 table tennis final between Ramseyer and Pearson could not come on due to administrative or organizational difficulties on the part of the school?

  • in 1969/70, Pearson and Ramseyer battered each other to a 3-3 draw in a World Cup-like soccer final? Ramseyer won the replay, 3-2. Pearson lost despite winning the admiration of the spectators, for their brilliant Brazillian type of soccer.

  • the 1970/71 Hockey Finals was placed twice? Both ended in draws between Aggrey and Ramseyer. A coin was tossed and Ramseyer emerged victorious. They were awarded the cup.

  • in 1967 June A-Levels: All 25 candidates presented for the A-Levels in Science qualified for admission to the University of Ghana? All the 100% candidates recieved 2 or more passes which qualified them for the University entry. 10 obtained 4 principal passes, 10 three passes and 5 two passes. There were in all 10 distinctions in a total of 10 distinctions on both Science and Arts.

  • Under the patronage of Mrs. Goodfellow, in 1967/68, the Prempeh red Cross had a historic tour of the Basel Mission at Agogo? They gave a number of gifts to the patients at the Hospital - these included: fruits, toys and magazines. S.O. Anane was the President. Anane wwill later go on to become a Freeman Housemaster in the 1980s.

  • Freeman beat Ramseyer House 8-2 in 1967 soccer tourney? However, Ramseyer junior team lived up to the appellation of "avengers" when they avenged the Seniors defeat by beating Freeman 3-2. They went on to beat Aggrey 2-1. The Ramseyer juniors went on to lose to Serwah by a lone goal in a game refereed by an Old Serwaain.

  • in '67, Butler's Canteen keeper and the Senior-in-Charge were sacked for not making any profits? Mpianing was chosen as the new Canteen keeper and he became their best ever.

  • Pearson set a record in 1968 by winning the hockey final (led by Mark Addo and Lamptey); Table Tennis (comprising Magnus Sandyson, Asante A.K and Sefa Boachie); the Athletics Championship; The Tokyo Shielld; The Tract Cup and the Football Championship? In form 3, the first 8 positions were taken by Pearson boys while a majority of the A-level prizes went to Pearsonians. In the same year, Pearson was the first house to introduce the concept of democracy to Prempeh. They were the first House to have a very well-organized House Council. Each form elected one member to represent it on this council and whenever they met, it was democracy at its best. Mr. R.T Sackey was their Asst. Headmaster then. Sackey will go on to become the Headmaster of Prempeh College in '84. The population of Pearson during that year was 90.

  • in '67, OWASS invited Prempeh College African Studies Group to help innaugurate their historical Society? Kwesi Ahwoi who was in Form 4 in 1963 won the lawn tennis trophy for Freeman House? K.O. Dako was the House Prefect then. Dako is the current Headmaster of Ofori Panin Sec. Sch.

  • Freeman won the Annual Inter-House Competition for 4 years running, setting 7 records? Owusu-Mensah won the 100, 220, and 440 yds with all new records. And Ohene-Frempong won the 1120 yds, hurdless, shot putt, long jump and tripple jump. Freeman athletes dominated the school team that won the Presidential shield for 3 consecutive years?

  • in 1970, Prempeh College Voluntary work camps Assoc. (VOLU) did so well in its usual services to neighboring villages that they were invited by Lt. Gen. Afrifa to help clean his hometown of Krobo? Prempeh Volu also went to help in the construction of Mancell's Vocational Institute. Little wonder that they received a personal letter of appreciation from Prime Minister K.A. Busiaa on 13th June. Busia commended them on their activities and asked the Sofoline boys to continue promoting self-help which is quite essential in nation building. This message injected a new enthusiasm into the boys and they embarked upon the the Krobo workcamp with greater vigor. They cleared weeds from from a new laid-out grass lawn which was very "brutal" to those with waist troubles. Their small records player was tickling them with delightful music and it was delightful to watch how members like Akosah F., Adade (Bavade), Adjei James (Sabontey), Asafo Adjei (Hundi), Joe Boaten, and T.O. Boakye, worked while contorting their bodies.

  • Mr. Fritz Palwerzick, the Prempeh College HI-Y Club's German Fraternal Secretary and friend, visited Prempeh on 11th May 1965 to bid the school goodbye as he was leaving the country for good? It would have been quite appropriate if Prempeh students had given him a souvenir but the club were badly out of funds. Prempeh boys were saved from disgrace when all of a sudden, OWASS delegates arrived and presented their souvenir in the name of the two schools, with Prempeh's crest attached! What a shock it was! However, OWAREANS will not turn up for the Hockey final the following year.

  • Prempeh pulled out of the Ashanti Regional Sports Federation in protest for about 2 years; against the hostile attititude of some schools towards ever-winning Prempeh? Instead, they focused on playing friendly matches and tournaments in other regions, including travelling to Keta Secondary School several times (part of 1969/70 - part of 70/71).

  • in the February 20, 1971 Speech Day, Mr. C.O.C. Amate, who served as one of the first staff members of the school (recruited by Rev. Pearson) was the Guest Speaker?

  • the 1970 A-Level Results was truly outstanding?

    19 students presented for the Arts course. 10 passed in all subjects, 4 passed in 2, 5 passed in 1. No student failed.

    30 students were presented for the Science course: 19 passed in all 3, 6 passed in 2, 4 passed in 1 and 1 had subsidiary pass.

  • in 1967, St. Monicas girls came to debate the Prempeh boys? The topic was "Money is the root of all evil." During the second term, Prempeh debating society had an internal debate on the Vietnam War, the most agitating issue in the world at that time. At the request of the Kumasi YMCA, Prempeh College debated Wesley College and lost. The topic was "the teacher is more important than the lawyer." Prempeh then travelled to Tema to debate Yema Secondary School on the topic, "Should we have Civilian Rule by 1970?" The Club's first Secretary, Adolf C. Bruce, resigned for personal reasons.
