Some Prempeh College Facts

  • Founded in 1949, Prempeh College is the Asante State's first college. It was the first school to be established in the Ashanti Region. Though St. Monicas Girls existed before then, they relocated from Cape Coast, Central Region.

  • Mr. Asamoah Owusu-Achiaw is the Headmaster.

  • The school has about 2400 students

  • It is a boys' school

  • Prempeh's motto is Suban ne Nimdee, (Knowledge & Integrity). The school's colours are green and gold. Though King Prempeh II suggested the school colours be the Asante Kingdom's colours - grren, black and gold - the black has never really been associated with the College.

  • There are about 250 students in each of the 9 houses. A ninth house is currently under construction. The rest of the student body are day students who commute from neighbouring Kumasi towns via the school bus daily.

    The green shirt and khaki
  • 1800 students apply to Prempeh as their first choice every year. 500 of the brightest of these are accepted.

  • The foundation of the school was derived from the 350, 000 British pounds King Prempeh II gave to Pearson for the establishment of the school.

  • The School's symbol is the stool. The King gave the school a replica of the Golden Stool - a silver stool - on February 5th, 1949. The Stool is to Prempeh what the Ark of Covenant is to the Israelites of old.

    The College cloth
  • The school uniforms are: short sleeve green shirt and khaki shorts for classes which can also be worn for prep on weekday evenings; khaki trousers and white long sleeve shirt on saturdays, which can also be worn for prep on weekday evenings (khaki trousers and green shirts are also allowed on Saturdays); and traditional kente cloth and white shorts on Sundays.

In addition, a special long sleeve white shirt and white trousers with the green school tie are worn on some sundays and on special ocassions during the course of a term.

    The white - white
This "white-white" is considered our "victory" uniform and they are worn on special occasions such as Speech Days, fun fairs, sports festivals, etc.

Then there is the famous "College cloth" which can be worn either on campus or for special events outside campus.

  • Of the Colleges 8.5 million net usable square feet of floor space, approximately 0.8 million net usable square feet are used for the following: academic, dormitory, staff residence space, a school farm and the largest sports complex in Ghana - 2 FIFA size soccer pitches, a hockey pitch, another FIFA size (125m length x 75 m width) unused space which use to serve as cricket pitch in the old days, and a basketball and tennis courts.

The school has land strecting from the Kwadaso River Junction through Adoato and Sofoline to Bantama. One school...it is situated in four towns! In fact, Neoplan Bus Headquarters occupies part of Prempeh land. The Military Barracks also occupies a part of Prempeh's pastoral universe.
